*4. No field of study can advance significantly unless outsiders bring their knowledge and experience to that field of study. [2] *4. 在任何一个学术研究领域,除非有领域之外的人带来他们的知识和经验,否则该领域就不能取得长足的进步。
The speaker claims that any area of study could not develop greatly without the help of other areas’ achievement and experience. In my point of view, I am inclined to support this kind of recommendation which can be substantiated by the following discussion.
To begin with, if we cast a look back to the history of human world, it is easy to find that any progress of study fields could not be separated from other relative fields’ influence. From the widely use of the game theory in economics to the predominant role of aerodynamics in manufacture of cars and airplanes, from the utilization of isotope in archeology to the huge contribution of X ray in medical world, etc. All of such countless exemplifications demonstrate the same truth that advancement in every field of study over the world has both effect of restrict and stimulus on each other. Without their progress and influence on each other step by step, no one could achieve any goal or even survive.
As we know, everything on earth is closely bound up. There is nothing isolated could live, including in the academic areas. Can you imagine how could those skyscrapers’ designers draw the blueprints of hundreds high buildings without the knowledge of mathematics and geometry? Can you imagine how could Watson and Crick find the beautiful spiral model of DNA without a microscope? Can you imagine how could Armstrong walk on the moon without the spaceship and rockets? Can you imagine how could the world move forward without the union of different areas of study? I believe the answer of us is the same, no, of cause.
Nobody lives in the vacuum and no fields of study are carried on in the vacuum either. After I was admitted to participate in a research group about Hp in the institute of Gastroenterology in one of the affiliated hospitals of my college, I found that most of the research methods and technology are with the help of other areas such as the immunology skills, molecular biological skills, anatomy and even radiology. Such instance is experienced by myself and is much persuasive, I think. If you are careful about the surroundings in your daily life, it is easy to discover examples as I showed, absolutely.
All in all, from what I mentioned in this issue, we could be comfortable to arrive to the conclusion that it is truth that no areas of study could make great progress without outsiders’ useful experience and knowledge, just as the author said.
