WORDS: 476526          TIME: 上午 00:48:00          DATE: 2007-1-23

According to the speaker, it is the artist not the critic who gives something of enduring value to the society. Although critic has merits to the society in certain respects, I strongly agree with the speaker that it is the artist who gives lasting value to the society. Moreover, the critic has some negative effect to the development of art to some extent.

Admittedly, it is the talented artist not the critic who gives something of lasting value to the society. As known to all, without the art works that are created by the artist, the critic has nothing to evaluate let alone giving any value to the society. And no matter how long the art works have to wait; those authentic arts would eventually manifest their value even without the critic. Consider, the well-known painter Von Gogh, created many worthy painting throughout his life. Although he failed to find any appreciative audience during his lifetime, his works with lasting value raised popularity steadily nowadays.

Yet, the critic has some auxiliary merits in certain respects such as translating the potential and hidden value to the masses as well as finding out more talented artists who can give something of lasting value to the society. The critic can evaluate and translate some potential and hidden spirits in the art works, which undoubtedly can help masses to understand the real value of the works. Consider, the famous painting--"Mona Lisa", which was created by the well-known painter Da Vinci, but until now masses can still not accurately understand the mysterious smile of Mona Lisa in the painting. Yet, with the help of some critics, people form their own ideas to catch the mysterious smile. In addition, the critic can find out more artists who might give something of lasting value to the society. By looking through and evaluating a myriad of art works, the critic can pick out some works that may be of value. And by acknowledging the value of their works to encourage the potential talented artists, the society can benefit for having increasing works of lasting value.

Notwithstanding the foregoing contributions that the critic makes, the critic may cause certain negative impact to the healthy development of art. Like any organism, the realm of art also needs pruning and clipping to keep the development of art healthy. As a gardener, the critic trims the realm of art by evaluating various works from diverse artists. However, any sharp criticisms may hurt those vulnerable but talented individuals thereby impede the development of art. Moreover, the critic primarily bases on the subject criterion rather than any objective criterion while evaluating art works. Thus it is entirely possible that the critic mislead the masses on certain art works. For example, the novel "Don Quixote" was considered to be a farce when it was published.

In conclusion, I agree with the speaker that it is the artist who gives the society something of lasting value. And to some extent and in certain respects, we should appreciate the auxiliary merits of critic to the understanding and development of art, while preventing the potential harm of critic to the realm of art.
