TOPIC: ISSUE150 - "Because of television and worldwide computer connections, people can now become familiar with a great many places that they have never visited. As a result, tourism will soon become obsolete."

With the technology developing faster and faster, television and worldwide computer connections do make the world smaller and smaller. However, I do not agree with the speaker's recommendation that tourism will soon become obsolete because the advanced media technologies. My reasons will be listed as follows.

To begin with, many people may hold the opinion that because of the exposure of everything by the media including the scenery of every sight in the world, people would not be willing to pay more money on the tourism which could be enjoyed at home. It seems ground at the first glance, but we do not have to look very far to uncover the flaws of this kind of view. On one hand, as we know, watching the pyramids in the television at home is so different from our standing in the desert and taking a photo with a camel in front of the wonder. On another hand, although the scene, the sound and other things could be transmitted by the media without any distortion, something like folk culture, the feeling of the hospitable people and countless important things that is the key spirit of a tour and could not be replaced by a television show.

In addition, if we cast a look back to the history of human world, it is easy to find that tourism never underwent a downfall from the ancient times to nowadays with the developing of technologies. And the truth is on the contrary, tourism was unadvanced and less popular in the past than in recent days, because the transportation technologies are much more advanced than before and make people to travel more convenient and cheaper. Especially the appearance of television and internet, what bring the information of different places all over the world to every people in other places and such information could probably attract people to travel some places they never been and know about. Thus, actually, the wide spread use of television and worldwide computer connections not only do no harm to tourism but also give energy to it.

Besides, the concept of tourism always changes as times goes by. For example, in the past when the vehicles were not so advanced, people could just have a tour to some places near to their hometown. But in our modern times when the spaceships have already be launched into the outer space, people traveling to the space or even the moon is not a dream anymore. So, from that angle which could also influence the development of tourism, we could not say that tourism will become obsolete as the speaker asserted.


All in all, from the analysis above, we could be comfortable to arrive at the conclusion that tourism will not be obsolete but be more and more popular with the highly developed technologies of television and internet.
