TOPIC: ISSUE38 - "In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books."
WORDS: 458 TIME: 上午 00:47:00 DATE: 2007-1-24
1. 无可否认,人们可以从电视中学得知识.e.g. be familiar with Hawaii that we have never visited,并且由于电视的特点:及时timely,直观,形象lifelike,生动vivid.
According to this statement, the speaker claims that people can learn as much as by watching television as they can by reading books, consequently reading books is not as significant as before. I tend to disagree with the speaker that reading books is still the primary means of learning though people can also learn by watching television.
Admittedly, people can learn much by watching television in some respects which are of timely and spatial information. Because television is more advanced in transmitting temporal and spatial information, people can learn easier in some spatial and temporal knowledge. Consider【consider没有这样用的吧,del就行了】, for example, people can be familiar with Hawaii where he or she has never been to by watching television【跟前面一个意群混到一块儿了,很不自然,by… And he or she can know the scenery and customs of Hawaii much better by watching vivid and lifelike television program. Moreover, people can learn the latest news and information though【through】 watching television. For example, we can learn the latest result of the nationally Presidential Election. Or we can know the latest outcome of high-technological researches such as certain medicine in curing AIDS. Thus, we can learn a lot information and knowledge through watching television.【这段中间浓缩一下,穿插对比之书本不能。
However, there are several shortcomings of learning by watching television. First, learning by watching television depends on electricity, access to airwaves or cable connections, without which we can not learn effectively and continuously. Second, according to a recent study of long-time watching television by University of Michigan, if we learn several hours per day in front of television, we are more likely to be myopia or some other illness due to the radiation of television. Finally, considering audiences of television are with different ages from kids to the aged and they are with different degrees of education,【一个considering把逗号前面的全部吞完了,没有主句了】 thus the television station withholds some information of the television programs. Therefore, people can not be access to a complete information or knowledge in some respects.【还是一样,突出比较,减少例子】
In addition, reading books as the primary ways of learning in current society has lots of advantages that can never be attained by watching television. First of all, learning through reading books is more systematic and can be access to more complete information than learning by watching television. Second【跟上段连接词重复,in addition, moreover, furthermore, Also, Still… 】, the books are more portable than the television machine which also depends on electricity and airwaves. Third, books can be re-read【?】 and reviewed whenever we want to and they are more convenient for cross-reference. Thus, as the primary ways of learning, learning by reading books can not be replaced by watching television nowadays.
In the final analysis, though learning by watching television is effective in certain respects, reading books is still the most significant means of learning. Thus, in order to learn effectively and conveniently, we should combine learning by reading books and watching television. |
