TOPIC: ISSUE186 - "Practicality is now our great idol, which all powers and talents must serve. Anything that is not obviously practical has little value in today's world."

  Practicality indeed brings us advancement in our society and are prompting our society to a higher level,so it really has become our great idol.However it does not mean that the unpractical has little value as the author asserts.In the fields that concerns about our practical life,such as  technology and education the idea of practicality indeed is dominant,but in the field whose task to discover the nature of the world and human,such as science,practilcality does not be considered as the most important aspect.
   As the symbol of the time,the advancement of the technology stands for the advancement of the soceity and the direction of the technology also decides the direction of our society.The most important character of the technology is just its practicality.The source of the technology is all kinds of needs of the modern society and the aim of it is to satisfy all of them.Without practicality anything in technology is surely unvaluable.
   
   As for the field of education,which brings us intelligence and help us to built the basic value system,has become more and more practical,both educates and students putting more and more attentions to practicality.In junior and senior classes more and more article lessons have been cut off just because they are unpractical.When choosing their major in college,the students will make such an important decision which influences their future not depending on their interests but the practicality which will bring them a good job or a nice income.

     It has to be admitted that practicality is the main stream of the society,but some fields that seems not so practical still have great value to our society.In the field of science whose main aim to explore the unknown world,most of its discoveries can not directly be converted as producility as technology,so it seems unpractical.However,science provides all basic knowledges the technology needs but prompt its development.Today no matter how advanced a technology is,it nust stem from one or more than one kinds of basic subjects:mathematics,phsics,chemistry,biology and so on.At the same time,science also prompt the development of technology and benefits from it.In the history,the need of the scientist to observe the stars and the university prompt the invention of telescope and it help us to a farther world;the need to observe the cells prompt the invention of the microscope and it promt us to know the microworld..Though the science does not benefits us immediately but it indeed influence us in the long run.
   
     In sum,practicality is the stimulus of the development of today’s world and surely should be the idol that all of us pursue.However the unpractical fields still have great influence and can not be ignored,including not only science but art,long range politics and so on.
