The arts (painting, music, literature, etc.) reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society.
1 For one thing, arts aim at figuring out the inner attitude and needs of the whole society. Take the case of Renaissance for example

Arts have a long history even existed in the primitive tribes. Arts express the inner world of individuals by means of painting, music, literature and so on, then represent the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society. Some may be against with me, arguing that arts can only depict the ideas of the artists who create the works rather than the ones of the society. However, they ignore a fact that every one is a part of the whole society and what they think can be related to the current society.
For one thing, arts aim at figuring out the inner attitude and needs of the whole society. Take the case of Renaissance for example, European are longing for liberating their minds and the requirement of freedom is more and more intense after many years of the domination under Christianity. Consequently, various revolutionary arts including paintings and literature emerged to express this requirement. Thanks to the courage which arts expressed, all kinds of realms started breaking the circle in which they are trapped. In the end, there came the whole Renaissance of Europe. This Renaissance promoted the great development of all fields of the society and helped establish the capitalistic system. Without the arts serving as a pioneer to reveal the inner concerns of the society how can we see a prosperous Europe.
For another thing, arts usually twinge with technology, politics and economics, which makes it possible that arts can influence the development of the society. Morality, virtue and obligation can be motif of certain art work. Those good characters are needed to regulate our human beings’ behavior. For instance, if the technology of cloning is applied on human beings, it will cause many moral and ethical problems. In addition, when our politicians make some strategies they must take the morality into account to make their decisions fairer. Only when arts react politics, technology and so on well, can we live a better life.
Admittedly, certain art work is usually the product of certain artist. In some sense, this work only reveals the inner thoughts of the author but that does not mean that the work by certain artist is not representative of the whole society. In fact, this author is living in our society and what he sees and hears only can derive from the society. So we still learn the trend of the society from his work. For example, in the background of the 60’s in the Unite States, the Beatles create music which reflected a discontent with society when homosexuality and racial discrimination along with other social issues prevailed. From this case, we can see that music by the Beatles not only demonstrate the discontent of the authors but also the bad phenomena of the current society.
All in all, arts play a crucial role in our society. What we think can be depicted by the means of arts including painting, music, literature and so on. To some extent, our government can turn to arts for help to find out what are the citizens’ needs and ideas and make appropriate strategies to meet the needs, because arts can reveal the hidden ideas and impulses of the society.

我的观点是:按照时间来的, 远古的时候,艺术是表达一些美好祝愿的,没什么反映社会问题的作用,后来,漫漫的,有人开始表达不慢,后来愈演愈烈.但是随着科技的发展,艺术已经越来越大众化,很多人在网上搞创作,所以,一些社会问题可以更加方便的以艺术形式来表达,艺术的作用更加明显,而且不仅仅是reveal了,而是直接的激烈的表达.
