Argument 117
1 First of all, the manager provides no information about how many people composed the respondents.
2 Secondly, even if that more people are required to work more at home than before is a true fact, increasing the stock of office-supplies does not necessarily indicate that the stores will get more profit from office-supplies.
3 Thirdly, even if people working at home need office-supplies and will buy them, it does not necessarily mean that people will go to Valu-Mart stores to buy those products.
In this memo the manager of Valu-Mart stores claims that their office-supply department will become the most profitable component of their stores by increasing the stock of office supplies such as paper, pens, and staplers. To support his conclusion, the manager cites a recent survey which indicates that over 70% of respondents are required to work more at home than before alluding that taking advantage of this trend and stocking more office supplies will bring them more profits. This memo suffers a series of poor assumptions, which render it wholly unpersuasive as it stands.
First of all, the manager provides no information about how many people composed the respondents. If the number of respondents is too small, the survey will be not statistically reliable. For example, if only ten people responded to the survey, how can we make conclusion from it? So without substantiating the reliability of the survey, we cannot conclude that more people are required to take more work home with them from the workplace than they were in the past.
Secondly, even if that more people are required to work more at home than before is a true fact, increasing the stock of office-supplies does not necessarily indicate that the stores will get more profit from office-supplies. Do all people working at home really need office-supplies for help? The manager offers no evidence to support that. It is likely that some jobs such as baby-sister do not require off-supplies. Therefore, the manager cannot convince us that stocking office-supplies will improve the profits
Thirdly, even if people working at home need office-supplies and will buy them, it does not necessarily mean that people will go to Valu-Mart stores to buy those products. What causes the unimpressive sales of office-supply is not mentioned in this memo, there may exist some key factors affecting the sales of office-supplies in the past such as the price and quality problems of their office-supplies which customers concern with greatly. If those problems have not solved thoroughly, Valu-Mart stores will still suffer from small sales of office-supplies. Moreover, even if the office-supply department of Valu-Mart stores can get more profits from selling its products, whether the department will become the most profitable component is still unknown. Maybe other departments have managed better than the office-supply department and their products are more attraction than office-supplies. If this is true, it is hard for office-supply department to achieve the most profits.
All in all, the evidence cited in this memo lends little support to what the manager want to maintain. To strengthen the conclusion, the manager would have to provide more evidence that the recent survey is reliable and people working at home will use and buy office-supplies from his stores. To assess the memo more fairly, we need more information about the causes of the low sales of office-supplies in the past and other departments besides office-supply department. |
