The speaker claims that the character of a society’s heroes and heroines reflects the character of that society. I tend to disagree. Based on personal experience and empirical observation of society, the spirit and behavior of heroes and heroines are often not simultaneous with the populace’s, so their character cannot represent the whole society’s character.

Firstly, the character of heroes and heroines is usually advent of that time, when the society lack the heroes or heroines’ virtue admired by the society. Spartacus is the hero in Slave Time, because what he did is the others never thought in that time; Henry Ford is the hero of industry, who introduced the assembly lines about which nobody had this idea, to the manufacture of cars; and Bill Gates, the great IT leader of our time, dropped out from Harvard University to build his own company amazed people of that time. These outstanding heroes’ characters do not reflect the character of society, but sometimes are opposite to the public value. (对上面例子中人物性格的分析和社会特征分析做比较，但是感觉例子不恰当。) So what we get the society’s character only by examining these heroes’ character doesn’t reflect the truth.

Secondly, due to the constriction of class, religion, and race, the character of heroes and heroines just represent a partial property of the society, at least not the whole society. Heroes and heroines are just the a few people in that period, and their characters can not be accepted by all people who may have differing viewpoints, different respect and distinguished benefits. Lincoln who led the Union during the Civil War and emancipated slaves in the South is a hero in American history. However, he didn’t represent the slaveholders’ benefits in the South, so from him we can not get a whole view about that society. The example of Martin Luther King who led black people to fight for their right also strikes this point. So the character of heroes and heroines does not show us the entire properties of that society.

Furthermore, we could not fully realize the characteristic of a community merely by the traits of herons and heroines. More angles to explore the community, more characteristic of it could be found out. In respect that, many more traits of community only in matter learnt by populace, architecture, music, the raiment and so forty occupy in the society. On the one hand, festivals and customs the populace has imply one side of the society. For instance, if adults educate children independence and self-determination as soon as possible, well then, the society has the sense of self-support. On the other hand, architecture, music, and raiment can reveal the other side of the society. Another example, the Arab women are dressed everyday, which is long enough to reach the floor; Purdah, wore by Arab woman, which veils the best part of her face, and just allows showing up eyes. Both of them display the Arabs is a conservative and old-fashioned society. Without learning these aspects to understand the character of society, less we could know.

To sum up, the trait of heroes and heroines is just one aspect of the society’s character, and is not the most important one. In order to study the society’s character, we have research the culture, the costume, the religion and especially the populace.
