Issue38 In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books.”

In the era of rapid science and technology, the way of watching TV people use to get information become increasingly common. Does it mean reading book is less important than it was before? The speaker claims so, for the reason that people can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books. I concede that we can get an enormous information through watching TV, nevertheless, reading books never cease to exert her power in imparting acknowledge.

We have grown up with various books, even today, in the age of television we still consider books as our best study friends. From the fairy tale about the girl of selling matches to allegory about fox and crow, to science theories. We benefit innumerably from books. You may argue children can watch the cartoon to know the same fairy tale and fable, admittedly, most children learn these stories certainly on television in this period. I confirm, however, the feeling on television is so different from on books. Facing the screen you merely watch the people and goods which producers already described. Meanwhile, the color arrangement and the people’s gestures intensely attract your eye balls. Be that as it may, when you are reading a book in a quiet place, you can feel you step into a sacred world, which only open to you. At this moment, your imagination like the flood which can not be holdback, then you digest and taste every single word the author wrote, enjoying the language beauty and the great character of the author. Most above all, you get some creative inspiring which the TV can not give us.

Furthermore, we may get the wrong information from the television. Consider, we just understand the content which the director made. He more or less distorts the original works, for the purpose the product can cater audiences’ favor. Therefore, the amount of series, movies, entertainments are far more than the amount of useful programs such as law channel, economic channel, scientific channel and so forth,. Moreover, people only know the title before they watch a program, it is waste time when this knowledge is useless for them or they have already known. But they can scan a book before read and then decide whether need peruse. In addition, people have to memorize some information more than once and need time to digest some things, so the function of books is predominant. Whenever or wherever we can take books without considering electric and signal line on which the TV depends.

Both the television and book support each other. Television would never ever substitute books. As is known to us, J.K Rowling who wrote the Harry Potter, has touched a huge audiences of all ages. Her best contribution is that she brings a new world which people especially kids begin to interest in books again, there are several million books in print.  

How could we imagine what the world would be like if people never read books again. Is the civilization progressing or retrogressing? The importance of reading books has been disregarded just like we disregard the pragmatic language which it is the groundwork for building a house. The harmony between book and television is the best way to learn more, they depend on each other and exert the most efficiency.
