When research priorities are being set for science, education, or any other area, the most important question to consider is: How many people's lives will be improved if the results are successful?

Human research in any kind of field is an important driving force to promote the social development. In the complex society, there emerge too many problems which incite the heated controversies on the direct goal of whether or not the research will bring about the whole human amelioration of life. As far as I am concerned, academic research has its distinctive advantage to serve the ultimate goal of benefiting people whether the first impulse is placed on the current or further interests.

Generally speaking, most research priorities are set for solving the gradually serious problems to improve human lives. Without the definite objective in the minds of researchers and scholars, it is difficult to bring the true benefit to the people. We can understand the idea clearly once thinking about the reason of scientific research. In transportation, to alleviate the tedious walk between two distant places, bicycles and other modern transportation were invented. In order to improve the speed and efficiency as well as solve the traffic problem, we appreciate the invention of railways, subways and airplanes around our lives. Similarly, in the medical field, thousands of patients are suffering from various kinds of diseases, so many researchers will put their eyes on the most serious diseases in the world such as cancers, diabetes, etc. to alleviate the angor as more people as possible. Only to satisfy the need of majority can the academic research have the value and impulse to continue.

In some cases, people may find the fact that research emphasis are placed to improve the advancement of a certain area rather than to consider how many people may benefit from it. These phenomena usually happen place in the literature or art. Compared with the scientific research, the music may seem to enjoy less population esp. the elegant art such as Opera, Orchestra, Sonata. But the achievements on them represent the high standard of nation culture and is indispensable for human lives. In archaeology, the research aims to discover the secret of human history and nature instead of seeking treasures to enrich humankinds. Can any one say they can be put aside because of the less relevance to people's lives?  Of course not.

Moreover, It should be pointed out that many researches, the original goals of which do not stand in improving human lives, may ultimately bring benefit to the majority of people in the process of social advancement. On the one hand, the balanceable development of all field promise the material and spiritual cultivation of humankinds. Because of the various kinds of music, our life become colorful and enriched. Because of the pursue of archaeology and history can we know the yesterday, understand today and have the ability and confidence to embrace tomorrow. On the other hand, different curriculums interact and are dependent on each other. Undoubtedly, we should appreciate so many theories of mathematics to support the development of other areas from physics, chemistry, computer to economics and architecture. None of us will deny the priority to encourage mathematical advancement although it seems too abstruse to have intimate link with our material lives.

In conclusion, people should be wised to keep the balance of research of all kinds of fields in order to promote the material and spiritual development. The research priorities can be set for such ultimate goal rather than the current interests on how many people can live better than before.
