2.The following appeared in a letter sent by a committee of homeowners from the Deerhaven Acres to all homeowners in Deerhaven Acres.
"Seven years ago, homeowners in nearby Brookville community adopted a set of restrictions on how the community's yards should be landscaped and what colors the exteriors of homes should be painted. Since then, average property values have tripled in Brookville. In order to raise property values in Deerhaven Acres, we should adopt our own set of restrictions on landscaping and housepainting."
——提纲——
In this letter, the writer recommends that Deerhaven Acres should intimate Brookville community to adopt a set of restrictions on landscaping and housepainting in order to increase the average property values. However, the author fails to provide sufficient evidence to support the conclusion.
The major flaw in this argument is that the arguer fails to consider more deliberately about the occurring time of Brookville’s case. A period of seven years is not a short term in which a community may probably take a tremendous alteration. It is likely that during this period the government decided to build another commercial center which happens to near the Brookville community, hence, there must be increasing opportunities for business that attract more investments from corporate firms. As a result, Brookville community’s property values, especially its houses’ prices, are likely to boost along with the prosperity of surrounding areas. In short, the growing of property values in Brooksville’s may not follow the policy of ameliorating the community’s appearance.
In addition, although planning to change yards and homes’ appearances has a correlated relationship with thriving of the community, they fail to be connected as a causal one. What if Brookville has a much safer circumstance so that people can be less worried about being purloined or robbed? And even though people are under attack, there is a well-operated hospital nearby preparing for accidentally getting injured. Meanwhile, it is likely that people would prefer choosing Brookville as the air is less polluted than other communities. On the other hand, even if the less serious pollution, in fact, is not an advantage of Brookville, there might be more employees rushing for new job opportunities--because of the newly developed commercial center--and consequently the apartments in nearby Brookville will be in high demand.Last but not least, the argument commits a fallacy of false analogy that differences between these two regions are ignored by the arguer. The residents in Brookville community are likely differ from homeowners of Deerhaven Acres in tastes of designs and colors for houses. The arrangements for identical structures of yards and the same colors on the exteriors of homes are popular among residents in Brookville community, but may be regarded as dull and boring by homeowners of Deerhaven Acres. Moreover, what if there are a number of house-seekers who would rather buying a distinctive house than living in a community which can not easily recognize their own house from the others’? If Deerhaven Acres keeps from adopting a set of restrictions on landscaping and housepainting, those potential customers will probably think over possessing a house in Deerhaven Acres while removing Brookville community from their list.
Overall, even if the author’s suggestion is well-presented, there are some intermediate steps that one could take before jumping to the conclusion. It will be much wiser to carry out a further research to find out the real cause of Brookville's increasing property value, and also see to some alternative methods to raise the property values in Deerbaven Acres.
