186 Practicality is now our great ideal, which all powers and talents must serve. Anything that is not obviously practical has little value in today's world.
实用主义是我们现在主要的追求，一切的力量和才智都必须为其服务。任何并非显著实用的东西在当今世界几乎是没有价值的。

In contemporary age, many people including the speaker argue that things would have little value in today's world if they are not obviously practical. Practicality has become our great idol, which seems that all powers and talents must serve. Actually, I disagree with this point of view. In my opinion, practicality and idealism are equally important for our society.

Admittedly, it is reasonable for people to pursue pragmatism in this practical age. People work hard to make money, and whatever they do is to acquire their own happiness. As everyone in America has what is called "American Dream" which was proposed by Martin Ruther King Jr., who once had a famous speech, which encourages people to fight for this dream so that people would have bread, car, house and so on. This illustrates that practicality is not only necessary but also a basic requirement for people living in nowadays.

Moreover, our society has benefited a lot from practicality since last two centuries, when industry revolution began. Each significant development can attribute to emergence of new technologies, which are practical. Steam engines providing power largely enhance the efficiency of manufacture, thus the shops full of products made by machines rather than by our hands. Electricity appearing as a new kind of energy, which accelerates the transportation of energy, makes it possible for the invention of radio, TV, telephone and so on. It is hard to imagine how people can live in modern time without electricity, which is the most basic thing in our society. Obviously, it is practicality that brings us a prosperous and colorful world.

However, people should not overemphasize the importance of practicality and ignore the effects of idealism. In fact, the difference between practicality and idealism is that the former one is short-term interest while the later one concerns the long-term one. If people do not take the welfare of our future generation into consider, crisis will definitely arise, which will not only threat the stability of our society but also hamper society progress. Actually, it is idealism that enables our society to proceed in the right direction. Therefore, we should hold this item in spite of neglecting it.

In conclusion, practicality has done a lot to the civilization of our human society, and has brought great convenient to people lives. While idealism makes sure a sustainable development of our world and remind us what the stakes are.
