There is no denying that a person without studying any course of academic discipline simply cannot recognize the true beauty and evil of the world around him. However, the fact is not as simple as the author asserts, there are many other factors that contribute to the effect on the learners. Let me present my viewpoint in the following details.
In general, one of the essential goals of the study is that equips the students with a pair of insightful eyes through providing them the academic courses, like mathematics, physics, biology, art, literature, philosophy and so forth. After studying enough academic disciplines, a naive child who used to be unaware of the world around him and only tend to be interested in the superficial things can turn into a little scholar who is able to search the hidden facts, reasons and rules behind those various phenomena he faces with everyday. In another aspect, after different studies, even minds with similar previous experience tend to pay attention on different areas. The elder brother of twins would like to attend a medical program in university and thus prefer to devote himself in medicine; while the younger may be interested in the business in Wall Street after receiving a MBA course. The former change leads us to a deeper understanding of the world, while the latter divides us into various working groups by our ways in which we perceive the world. Both of the two factors contribute to the survival and prosperity in the modern society.
However, that the study of an academic discipline alters our viewpoints of the world does not necessarily mean that their viewpoints towards the world change to a better direction. A blind acceptance of certain discipline may brings the learners incorrect ideas which may lead to serious problems to individualities, or even worse, disasters to the world, and that is what has happened to Hitler's Germany. By studying the autocrat's crazy Nazi theory, youths in Germany had the conceptions that can not be more astonishing and evil in their minds--the superiority of the German race and the inferiority of the Jews. They were also told that the only solutions to the survival and prosperity of Germany are violence and war. Then the racial slaughter towards Jews and the Second World War, which are unprecedented disasters in human history, finally came. The civilization was calamitously undermined, in some districts even ruined, attributes to a zealotic and blind but powerful Germany. So before one accept the recommendations, conclusions or other information from a certain discipline, he should think carefully according to the circumstance and the knowledge that he already knows whether this is useful or harmful, rational or irrational, true or false. Without learning a man may be stupid; but learning without thinking and choosing, the man may be a dangerous tool of devil.
A better way may be that the study of an academic should not control the alternatives of our eyes on the world. It shall be the learners who are in charge of what learning materials they need and what is the right help effect long for through the process of study. One should be careful and sensitive of what he search and what is told to him, cautiously distinguish the truths from the wrongs, finally chose what fits and makes sense to himself. For example, Carl Max, who was willing to reveal the secrets of the capitalistic economy, spent years of time in London Library searching for the information he needed but not to blindly accept the other's capitalistic economists' opinions which were quite popular at that time. Finally he succeeded, and found his own theory.
In summary, if one avoids learning anything, he is of course blind; if he simply accepts all the disciplines that are told to him, he is stupid, and may even be dangerous for the reason that he may be the tool of certain evil person; if he can search the right and exact information he wants and pay his own thought before recognizing anything, he is a wise man. The world is indeed the same as before, but that he himself has already found his own world through his eyes.
