Issue186 Practicality is now our great ideal, which all powers and talents must
serve. Anything that is not obviously practical has little value in today's world.

提纲
1.实用性的确是当今社会崇拜的对象，大部分的力量和才智都在为其服务，这是由于社会发展的阶段性和人民的生活水平所
客观决定的。中国还是发展中国家，2006人均收入仅1100美元，世界排名109位；与此同时，美国、日本、英国、德国则分
别为37600、34500、28300、25200美元。收入水平低，故人们把解决温饱问题放在第一位，使得我们变得更加追求实用性，
理所当然把绝大部分的注意力集中在此，保证每一份的投入都能产生相当或更大的效益。
2.但是，当进入发达社会时，实用性的地位就会下降，更多的人会去追求并非显著实用的东西。例如，在西方发达国家，美英
德，人民生活富裕、温饱问题已不是首要问题，更多的人将出国旅游，购买跑车、别墅等实用性很低的东西作为消费对象，实
用性低并不代表没有价值，它们给予人们精神上的满足，是消费的更高层次。
3.另外，崇拜实用性不能过头，否则将转化为功利主义。可能抑制哲学、艺术、宗教等非显著实用的领域的发展，使得人们过分
追求效用，看重短期利益而忽视长期利益。
4.最后，当今世界是一个物质资料相对匮乏的世界，故实用性还将是我们崇拜的对象，但是绝对不能极端化，还需要一定的
力量和才智为“不实用”的领域服务。

The correctness of the contention that practicality is our great idol in today's world, which all powers and talents must serve, relies on the different 'worlds'-developing countries or developed countries we live in. While this claim has considerable merit with respect to the situation in developing or have-not countries, I take exception with the claim when it comes to developed or wealthy countries.
   
Admittedly, practicality is one of our idols in nowadays society. Most of the powers and talents are waiting to serve it as a center of our life. This phenomenon is impersonally determined by current stage of the society development as well as the average income of the citizens. The statistic numbers tells us, for example, that China, though, has being endured a soar in economic increase, and a developing country all the same differed from the developed countries. In 2006, Chinese average income merely reaches to 1100 dollars, ranking 109 in all of the world; While the number rises, over thirty times of China on average, to 37600 dollars in the USA, 34500 dollars in Japan, 28300 dollars in the UK and 25200 dollars in Germany which are all economic leaders of the world. Because of the low income, we have to place chief importance not on enjoyment but on existence which drives us to become more and more realistic. Go without saying that we, people in developing countries, tend to focus mass of our attentions on pursuing practicality and mean to ensure that each buck plunged in can generate more, at least the same benefit to the users.
   
Yet, when it comes to the developed countries, in which citizens are much wealthier than us in developing countries, the status of the practicality we admired will descend. More people together with more powers and talents are attracted by something that is not obviously practical and at the same time the practicality is being neglected. For example, in western developed countries such as the USA, the UK and Germany, people live in abundant and existence is never the most significant problem any longer. As a result, travelling abroad, purchasing luxurious cars and houses are on more and more people's list. However, the things on the list are not visible practical or even unpractical. But things with low practicality doesn't mean to be little value, travelling, luxurious cars and houses support the consumers with contentment in spirit, which is the superior level of consuming. For them, these things are of great 'practicality'.
   
In addition, we can not admire practicality to the extreme. Or else, it will transform to utilitarianism, the ethical theory proposed by Jeremy Bentham and James Mill that all action should be directed toward achieving the greatest happiness for the greatest number of people. If this happened, people will excessively pursue practicality. With little notice, fields such as philosophy, art and religion which are not obviously practical will be inevitably affected. Utilitarianism is about to shorten people's views and ignore the long-term advantage.
   
Above all, from the global perspective, the world nowadays is far from to be a rich world for the reason that tens of thousands of people are still struggling to maintain their lives. So, practicality will be also the whole world's great idol when most of the countries have not joined in the wealthy club. However, we have to share part of our powers and talents to serve unpractical fields.
