I agree with this idea, I think that it is really does that artist gives society something of lasting value. Critic takes a little part in it.
Artists created works using their unique inspiration. Wherever these work reflect their minds which is deep in heart or the full panoply history of human beings. The critics who have some kinds of knowledge related evaluate the works.
The artists try their hard to make the work more valuable. Some of them endure the huge pain. Such as one of the Four big actresses Huifang Xun(in china, there is a traditional drama which is that boy plays a girl’s role) With acting more skilled, he pained more and more than any other actor. So his works are high regarded. People like his works so much that his works can be preserve to nowadays. Some of them open their mind, use their unique fantasy to make his work more authenticity. Such as Yong Jin, he did not have the skill of gongfu, but he created the best Chivalric fiction novel, he is not only famous in china, but also overseas. Some of them have extremely high talent. Such as Beethoven, he can still created great work when he is deaf.
Without much paining, splendid fantasy and high talent, I do not think the work will be lasting valued if it only has some commentary on it. It can not be handed down from one generation to any others.
In another hands, the critic also play a positive role in preserving the art work. Critics can help us understand and interpret art more deeply, also the critic can play a role as a filter which helps us determine which art is worth our time and attention, and they can provide feedback for artists, when they totally take their subjective mood off. With strong subjective mood, their commentaries are useless. Even the work can be ruined.
In sum，artists created the lasting valuable work, the critic, if they make any, takes tiny.
