TOPIC: ARGUMENT87 - The following appeared in a memo to managers of Christine's, a chain of craft stores.

"Several major newspapers have recently run articles noting an increased interest in pottery. The number of potters in this country has risen by eighteen percent in the past five years, and pottery is particularly gaining popularity on college campuses. In order to take advantage of these trends, Christine's should immediately begin carrying a larger volume of pottery supplies. Since several of our stores have recently experienced a decrease in sales of painting supplies, all store managers should reallocate shelf space from the painting area for the display of pottery. Stores should display posters showing pottery that is designed to appeal to college-age individuals. These actions will undoubtedly increase our profits dramatically."

提纲:
1.       草率推广让所有的商店遵其所为
2.       利润上升显著证据不足
3.       忽略了其他可能是商店自己原因导致的painting 的销售下降,而错误改售可能无利的pottery
This argument’s author asserts that the change of arrangement between the pottery and the paintings would undoubtedly increase the profits dramatically. To illustrate this the arguer cites the evidence that the whole country's number of potters has risen in the past five years especially in campus and for a decline sales of painting supplies. The argument fails as it suffers from several fallacies as follows.

The first problem that undermines the argument is the hasty generalization of giving the place of paintings to pottery supplies in all its stores. The arguer does not give any other information about the places of the stores between the college campus, and then just replace all the paintings with the pottery. If the campus is far from the stores and the college students almost never get into these stores but others, how come that would make any profits if the painting can still sell well but just declined a little when compared with before.

Second, the arguer fails to give enough evidence to support the conclusion that the profits will undoubtedly increase dramatically. Maybe the stores’ strategies of sale do not do well, thus make few consumers be there, and also the increase of the profits will be impossible. In addition, the pottery designed to appeal college-age individuals still makes me feel doubt about the sales of their pottery. Admitted that the pottery is popular with the college campuses but they cannot afford so much money as other adults, who still are fantastic about the pottery and have the ability to buy it. In that case, this action would be, of course, a failure to lose an even bigger group of consumers.

Third, the auguer overlooks other possible alternatives which may also lead to the decline of the painting supplies. Maybe the consumers still like the paintings and just for the reason that the store does not place well painted paintings out which make them feel the store does not sell or not have gotten good paintings. The arguer does not analysis this, just make this come into a mistaken action.

In sum, this argument is not well supported as it stands. To make the argument more convincing, more evidence and causes of these phenomenons should be put out and effective solutions should be set forth.
