Do technologies not only influence but actually determine social customs and ethics, as the speaker asserts? Many people have their own opinions. In my point of view, it is true that well-developed technologies influence social customs and ethics, but to some extent, social customs and ethics determine the directions of technologies.

Admittedly, technologies provide a great influence on human's social customs as the time rapidly changes. The aim of inventions and technological development is to comfort human's life and then assure people to make their own choices. The invention of printing offers a right of reading to common people, but not the only right to the aristocrat; the utility of the first assembly line of Ford Company increased workers' income and reduced the cost of a car. From that time cars were becoming cheaper than horses to buy and maintain. The wide-spread of informational highway expands human's eyesight and accelerates the communication. People today can obtain useful information in time, communicate in an efficient way and live comfortably. In this sense, technologies actually change human's living pattern at many walks of life.

In addition, ethics suffer from a huge amount of challenge by technological progress. Firstly, the outdated and hackneyed ethics give way to the new-fashioned and tested opinion by technological progress. In the past, some people believed that intermarriage would produce more strong and elegant offspring than others. But unfortunately modern genetics told us that the children from such intermarriage are more likely to have some sickness. Secondly, with technologies we will recognize more ethics questions, which do not been realized by human or gain enough attention, than any time before. For instance, recent years abortion comes into our eyesight as a social problem; is abortion some kinds of murder creature, is it a kind of disregard of life. Therefore, ethics is changing and evaluated under the influent of advanced technologies.

However, technologies cannot utterly determine social customs and ethics, but to some degree, are regulated by social customs and ethics. Everyone lives in society and relationship which is stable and filled with traditional customs or ethics. Consequently, what environment of customs or ethics ones belong to will lead to a particular judgment on some technologies. For example, from the view of customs or ethics, most nations reject to encourage and adopt clone (Although, some countries may invest this research in a secret measure). Even if some experiences on animals have make a great success, but this technology still does not use into people. On the other hand, without respect and direction of customs and ethics, our culture and science would suffer from a series of difficult including feckless buildings, Nuke and so forth. Thus, traditional customs and ethics determine the direction of technologies.

In conclusion, unquestionably, there is an interaction between technologies and social customs and ethics, and it is unwise to overemphasis ether of them for people.
