Actually, the issue on whether the video camera is such a great equipment for recording contemporary life that it plays a more significant role than written records is a complex and controversial one. Although the author give a definite yes on such point, I can hardly fully agree with the argument, because the video camera have both good and bad sides in recording live life, and the written style also has huge advantages, as discussed below.

Admittedly, video camera has its unique merits of providing vivid pictures of contemporary lives, which are more easy and enjoyable for people and our offspring to understand and analysis. It is really hard to imagine, without the invention of video camera, how can we so clearly memorize an exciting birthday party, the amazing smile of our parents, even the exact moment of the shoot in the World Cup. Undoubtedly, this is much more vivid than just reading the written record. And since the latter one may cause inaccurate record resulting from the inappropriate expression, video camera of course serves better for accurately record every moment we consider worthwhile.

However, as a sword, the video camera unavoidably have some drawbacks as well. With the fast development of the computer technology, nowadays, cheating with video camera is not so difficult and even may become a popular trend. Last year, a piece of video record which told a "true" story about three youngsters meeting a ghost and finally dying from car accident was shown in Internet and led to broad discussion. Since people trust the accuracy of video record so much that some people really began to believe the existence of ghosts. That is a classical example to show that how easy and harmful the cheating with video camera is. For that matter, we may never completely trust what is in the video record before further examination. And that is why video camera is far from becoming the most important form of documentation.

On the other hand, the written records, which exist for thousands of years and is still wildly used, show its huge advantage in recording contemporary life. First, it is easier and more realistic to write down whatever we'd like to record. Because video camera is still a comparatively expensive equipment, it is impossible for every family or person to own one, thus writing is the only methods available to record their lives. Second, there are something that the video camera can hardly accurately and conveniently record, for example, our human mentality and emotions. We can excitedly write ten pages of diary about our feelings after a success in a competition or job hunting. And writing is obviously what we gonna do we read some amazing books and cannot help recording our thoughts on that matter. While video can hardly record how deep our thoughts are or how fiercely our emotions can become, thus never a more important form of documentation.

To sum up, although the video camera does have some excellent advantages in recording contemporary life, it can never take place of the written records. On balance, yet, the two kinds of methods may be perfect compliment to each other. Only when we combine the utility of them in recording our contemporary life can the merits of both ways be showed together.
