ISSUE130 “How children are socialized today determines the destiny of society. Unfortunately, we have not yet learned how to raise children who can help bring about a better society.”

Ancient Greek philosopher Plato once said, “Better be unborn than untaught, for ignorance is the root of misfortune.” Although nowadays everybody has the opportunity to enter a school to receive education, however, as a matter of fact, in the past teachers often stress too much on expertise or professional skills in order to better prepare them for a specific job but missed an important part of education---to teach them how to socialize with the society. With the awareness of this shortcoming, society already take measures to cultivate children in a more comprehensive way.

Socialization is conducive for children to be better equipped for future, and in this sense, it determines the destiny of society. In the process of getting along with others, children gradually establish the self-awareness, and social understanding. Even in a simple game, in which each of them perform a role, they observe other children’s behavior and quickly join in harmoniously. Besides, when conflicts occures, they know how to negotiate, bargin, compromise, redirect. consequently, the most socialized one always became the potential leader in his/her group, illustrated by Napoleon and J.F.K who were good at getting along with all kind of children and maybe this was the very reason for their future success. On the other hand, some children may be rejected by peer and aftermath is always their isolation from society and even distorted psychology. It is clear to us the most socialized children are more tend to be useful for society, and thus this issue is quite reasonable as for how children are socialized today determines the destiny of society.

However, in the case of children are involved in this complex relationships of society too early, it conversely will be pernicious for their development. They are a vulnerable group in society because of their innocence and unsophistication. Lacking of basic knowledge and experience in personal communication, they are prone to commit silly faults, and they do not know when to further contact with others, when to flatter others, when to fence with others. Therefore, if they bog in this sophisticated society before they are mature enough, they are doomed to be deprived the deserved innocence and become the victims of society.

As for the assertion that we have not yet learnt how to raise children who can help bring about a better society is not in my approval, and instead, social education already take measures to cultivate children’s capacity in socialization. Besides the knowleage education, educators tell them the story about Abe Lincoln walking three miles to return 6 cents, to inform them what does “honesty” mean; they make children understand why Socrates told Crito “No, I must submit to the decree of Athens”, to tell them what does “respect for the law” imply; they also imbue them with precious ideas presented in the canons from Bible to the Analects of Confusions, to help them chew what the sense of “love, tolerance, respect, responsibility” and so on. All of these contents enlighten children to be better citizens and influence their value towards themselves and the society.

In sum, indeed upon the degree of socialization children are determines the destiny of society, and happily we find that society have already begin to raise children in a more comprehensive way, and better prepare them for constructing a better society.
