TOPIC: ISSUE208 - "The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people."
WORDS: 416 TIME: 0:55:00 DATE: 2007-3-22
I fundermentally (这个词慎用)agree with the author that people's attitudes and interests may be revealed by their appearance and activity, by which we definetely can tell something about a society's ideas and values. However, some other conditions should also be taken into consideration.
First, the way people dress, look and act does tell something about their attitudes and interests. For example, the habit of a youngster to listen to MP3 when walking shows his/her strong interests in music. And the girls wearing Korean style clothes must be crazy about Korean popularity. By (In)contrast, it is hard to imagine a person who always avoids mentioning certain movies is really crazy about them. Anyway, people’s behaviors are mainly directed by their thoughts and evaluations, therefore, their selection of dress or behavior does reveal part of their interests and ideas.
Further, the appearance and behavior of the citizens do show certain ideas and evaluations of the society. Since people's appearance and behavior can show their attitudes and interests, if the majority of people in a society share similar or the same behavior or appearance, of course we can judge the values and ideas of the society. For example, if most citizens prefer wearing casual clothes, it may represent favor of free-style life, otherwise, more serious manner may be more respected. Similarly, if most citizens in a country treat morning exercises as routines, the society may highly evaluate the merits of sports.
However, we can never neglect the possibility on whether people are free to select whatever they want to dress and certain behaviors are not forbidden. (这里应该有个代表全段的TS)In some autarchies, like old Germany ruled by Hitler, people's behavior even appearance are strictly regulated. For example, during the Second World War, German soldiers are ordered by Hitler to search and kill Jews, even though they may hate doing so,(汗,这里很牵强) they can hardly disobey such order. Hence, such behavior does not necessarily show their own ideas and values, (not mention)even those of the society. When it comes to the democratic society, certain regulations may still be maintained, for example, high schools may ask its students to wear uniform, which may not be the exact attitude and interests of students. (和社会的关系?)Therefore, only when the freedom of citizens are guaranteed can we make certain conclusions from their decisions in appearance and behavior.
In sum, although people's appearance and behavior may show their attitudes and interests, we may not get the true ideas and values of the society before making detailed and complete research about the society.
