Can we know about the ideas and values of a society by observing the appearance and behavior of its people? Although some people hold the idea that the outside appearance and behavior cannot be representive for the inside ideas and values, I do agree that the way people dress and act reveals their individual attitudes and interests which could reflect the society’s overall ideas and values in some degree.

The way people dress and act do reveal their attitudes and interests according to the present situation of the society. If there are many beggers who wear very ragged clothes in the streets, the people who are comparitive rich never pay attention to them and everyone in the society gets used to the behavior of begging, then you know the society admits that there could be both the rich and the poor in the society.If there are various kinds of arts existing in a society and people could freely choose any of them to study, you will know the country accepts the differences between different arts and encourage people to develop them. In the same way, you can easily make a judgement whether a society is open or not by its people’s dress and act.

A open-minded society will not forbid its people to wear the same style clothes. The popular singers could wear stylish clothes in the stage for the performances, the business men could wear the formal suits and ties to attend an important meeting, the youth could wear in jeans and T-shirts which make them comfortable. Before the Open-Policy carried out in China in 1980, nearly every man wore a traditional Chinese shirts while all of the women hardly wore skirts or dress. The simple clothes is called “to meet the requirement of revolution”,but in fact it indicates that Chinese were a little reserved at that time. Another example is from Tang dynasty, although it existed more than 1000 years ago, compared to other dynasty, their clothes were colorful and attractive because they traded with the other countries a lot and absorbed advantages from other cultures.

The people in a free society could engage in any subjects they like. In early Qing Dynasty which was more than 500 years ago, the emporor didn’t allowed the people to create new ideas and write new books. The only thing the literal and history researches could do is to review the past achievements and to proof whether it is reliable or not,therefore no one had the chance to suggest new ideas against the rulers. It was obvious that the emporor are successful to maintain his rule with help of restrictions.However, it proved the people didn’t have much freedom in the past again. Nowadays, in a free country there is desmonstration in the street, hot discussion about important social events in the neighborhood and different opinions published about science and technology. People could act without any limitation except breaking the lows, so that we know the society is open.

In sum, people’s appearance and behaviour could reflect the present ideas and values in the society. As the discussion and examples above, you can decide whether the society is open or not open by observing how the people dress and act in it.
