The speaker claims that people should obey just law and, at the same time, disobey and resist unjust laws. In my view, in democratic society, all citizens must adhere to laws, whatever they are just or unjust. However, people have rights to fight against unjust laws in a peaceful way.
In civilized countries, laws must be enacted to offer people a guideline on the behavior that is expected of them. Without rules of law, the state risks sanctioning cruelty and inhumanity, because in such chaotic and disorganized society, it is easier for human beings to evoke animalistic desires innate within the human soul. What is more, in democratic states, laws are established based on values, beliefs, and morals of its citizenry, and therefore, in ideal condition, such laws represent general will and treat people equally. In such legal system, it is responsible for all citizens to faithfully and dutifully obey these just laws and any one violating any law must be punished fairly and in proportion to their crime.
At the same time, the speaker also claims that people have rights to disobey unjust laws. If people are allowed to disobey laws without punishment because the laws seem unfair to them, the society is risk sanctioning illegal behaviors and civil disobedience. As a result, individuals would be tempted to disobey any “unjust” law which seems unfair to them with an excuse, regardless of other people’s interests. In this case, the society would end up with anarchy and even result in the annihilation of the population.
However, when politicians and government officials are establishing laws, it is possible that they are failing to foresee and predict inadequacies and set up laws which cannot embody the justice for most people’s interests. In this case, people should fight against such laws in a peaceful way to bring attention to the legislation organization to change or repeal such laws.
To sum up, it is vital for all citizens in a community to obey all laws to make sure the stability and order of a society. At the same time, if laws established by the administrative fail to represent people’s justifiable and legal interests, they have rights to appeal to modify or repeal these laws.
