TOPIC: ARGUMENT65 - The following appeared in a memo from the president of a chain of cheese stores located throughout the United States.

"For many years all the stores in our chain have stocked a wide variety of both domestic and imported cheeses. Last year, however, the five best-selling cheeses at our newest store were all domestic cheddar cheeses from Wisconsin. Furthermore, a recent survey by Cheeses of the World magazine indicates an increasing preference for domestic cheeses among its subscribers. Since our company can reduce expenses by limiting inventory, the best way to improve profits in all of our stores is to discontinue stocking many of our varieties of imported cheese and concentrate primarily on domestic cheeses."

In this argument the author reaches the conclusion that all of their stores should discontinue stocking imported cheese and concentrate on domestic cheeses. For supporting this conclusion the author provides a survey shows an increasing preference for domestic cheeses, and additionally, the author also provided the evidence that the five best-selling cheeses in their newest store are all domestic cheeses from Wisconsin. I find this argument is logical unconvincing in several respects.

First of all, the situation of newest store is not the situation of all stores. It is possible that that store is open in Wisconsin or people there like cheeses from Wisconsin more while people in other places may like imported cheeses more. For the failure of the author to investigate or even consider these possibilities renders the conclusion based on it highly suspect.

Second, even if assuming that best-selling cheeses in all stores are domestic cheeses, the author's claim that concentrates on domestic cheeses and discontinues stocking imported cheese is also unconvinced. For best-selling does not mean high profit, may be the reason people buy it is its low price while imported cheeses may have a higher profit for fewer selling due to its higher price. So the conclusion of the author is not assured unless ruling out this possibility.

Finally, the survey which provided by the author is not persuaded either. There is no information about the sample of the survey and we do not know whether the method of statistic used in the survey is reliable. Perhaps the sample of the survey is too small to judge the conclusion or perhaps only who like demotic cheeses responded the survey. In a word, there is not enough information to judge whether the survey is believable.

In summary, the conclusion that given the author cannot be judged as the best one with provided information. To make it more convincing, the author should provide more concrete evidence to demonstrate his claim and to rule out the other possibilities such as being cite above.
