TOPIC: ARGUMENT38 - The following memo appeared in the newsletter of the West Meria Public Health Council.

"An innovative treatment has come to our attention that promises to significantly reduce absenteeism in our schools and workplaces. A study reports that in nearby East Meria, where fish consumption is very high, people visit the doctor only once or twice per year for the treatment of colds. Clearly, eating a substantial amount of fish can prevent colds. Since colds are the reason most frequently given for absences from school and work, we recommend the daily use of Ichthaid, a nutritional supplement derived from fish oil, as a good way to prevent colds and lower absenteeism."

In this argument, the arguer recommends that the daily use of Ichthaid is a good way to prevent colds and lower absenteeism. However, the arguer fails to provide sufficient information to show how serious the absenteeism is in West Meria and hastily treats the relations between Ichthaid and colds and absenteeism as causal relations.

The major problem of the argument is that the arguer provides no information of the absenteeism in West Meria. With all the recommendation based on the premise that the absenteeism is serious, if the absenteeism in West Meria is not a big problem at all, the rest of the argument will be invalid. Even if the absenteeism in schools and workplaces in West Meria is serious, it might not be caused by colds. Unless a solid evidence shows that nearly all the people absent is because of a cold, there is a good chance that people in West Meria do not like to work and take catching a cold as a good excuse for their absence. Before seeking for a prescription for colds, the officials in West Meria firstly should ensure the real situation and then the reason for absence.

Another flaw that weakens the argument is that the arguer takes the correlation between eating fish and less cold as a causal relation without giving further information. It is possible that people who live in East Meria are more likely to doing exercise since they enjoy better public services, and it is equally possible that they have some other food that prevents them from getting a cold. Even they do catch a cold, it is possible that people in East Meria are not intend to turn to the doctors since it is easy for them to heal from illness such as colds. If those are the reasons why they visit the doctor only once or twice per year, then eating fish will not be considered as a treatment to prevent colds.

Before I go to the conclusion, there are some other flaws in the argument should be pointed out. Even it is true that eating fish can prevent colds, but whether the daily use of Ichthaid will prevent colds remains to be a problem. Because the Ichthaid are derived from fish oil, if the certain material is not contained in the fish oil, then taking it will not prevent colds. The arguer also does not provide the price and the might-be side effect of Ichthaid. If the price is too high or the material cause some kind of undesirable side effect, most people will not likely to buy it, even it does good to health.

To sum up, before the information of absenteeism is provided and the precise relation of eating fish and less cold is justified, the recommendation will not be accepted.
