ISSUE226 - "People are mistaken when they assume that the problems they confront are more complex and challenging than the problems faced by their predecessors. This illusion is eventually dispelled with increased knowledge and experience."

Are we really confronting with more difficult and complex situations than our ancestors did? Or could we effectively solve these problems? The speaker claims that such wrong allegation would be ultimately dispelled with currently acquired knowledge and experience. In my point of view, increased knowledge and experience definitely give a hand to human for problem solving, however, this is never the case that we could easily handle varieties of problems in modern society and more humanity is needed to be implemented with science and technology.

Admittedly, human are facing with more complicated natural, political and social problems than any ancestors preceded us. For thousand-year unlimited abuse of natural resources, our predecessors made us confronting with varieties of natural problems that overwhelm on this planet. While ancient people took the advantages of fertile lands and celebrating with cornucopia in harvest seasons, some of us have to face the embarrassment of emigrating out of these over-cultivated areas to avoid famine and drinking-water shortage. Neither had our predecessors been annoyed about the materials that would never be decomposed thus imperil the environment, such as the plastics, wasting electrical chips, which attribute to current thriving petrochemistry or any other modern industries. People always take more consideration to the development of personal life by purchasing more sophisticated techniques, whereas, severely overlooks the negative influences innate with them and entrapped ourselves with challenges that much overweigh human intelligence.

In the political realm, people seems to be get more experiences since we have been moved on from hundreds of historical events and become more mature to solve problems. Legislatures originated as the amendments for assuaging political uproars, ethnical riots and religion conflicts really help the society to become more compatible, however, those problems are deeply hidden inside and even become worse than ever under current geopolitical changes. Take the long-term Israel-Palestinian conflict as an example, although different political entities, the United Nations and international societies have made great efforts trying to appease the vendetta between two nations, any power seems to be too feeble to handle this issue for years. And under recent high-tension between western and eastern world, even the accomplished achievements by the international talks, like the Middle East Accord 1993, are obviously offset by the escalating conflicts occurred in the lands of historic Israel and Palestine. Furthermore, it is even worsening under some commercial bully we used to prove as effective to forestall the violence. In another word, those alleged effective knowledge and experience even could bring about new problems other than solving the former ones.

Nevertheless, few can object the point of view that we become more confused than our ancestors about the world as we broad our spectrum into the micro-world and the space far from the planet we live. We have deeply investigated the etiology of different diseases among human population last century and even go to the level of gene study trying to explore the fundamental cause for any kind of ailments. But numerous endemic emerged in various regions of the world, like hemorrhagic diseases in African tribes, SARS transmitted along Chinese population and the intractable diseases coming from forest animals, quite a lot that still remain as the secrete ones coming and going away. The more we learned, the less confident we are to have the ability to fight the diseases.

In the final analysis, I concede that current people are facing with more complicated social, political or natural problems than ever before, although new knowledge and experiences could counterpoint some of that. Even in some cases, current techniques could do little to solve the problems brought about with human development, along with the interaction between human and the nature, maybe more humanity implemented with experiences we have already achieved could be helpful for people to encounter some dilemma, like ethnical, religious conflicts occurred all around the world in recent years. Tolerance, humanity and sacrificing are the gifts bestowed by God which we seem to neglect for a long time. Taking back those virtues could empower ourselves to deal with even more complicated problem, of course, with the help of techniques and intelligence we inherited from the old generation.
