"Scandals-whether in politics, academia, or other areas-can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could.

The speaker contends that scandals are useful in many areas for the reason it is scandals rather than speaker or reformer that play the most important role in attracting people's attention to some problems. As my observation, scandals do raise the public's interest on some issues, however, when refer to the usefulness of scandals, I claim that whether they are useful highly depends on the purpose or standpoints of people.
Admittedly, scandals, as the word itself contains a special meaning, actually do a great job in playing as an attractive role in the society drawing people's eyesight. The mistakes make[made] by ordinary people are called mistakes whereas are called scandals when there are connections between these mistakes and some famous or important people[意思明白,不过这话别扭,而且scandal的意思(Webster tells us that it brings us loss or damage of reputation on one hand and takes disgrace to our lives on the other).]. Being ordinary often meaning unattractive while being special always equals with attractive. Furthermore, in order to enhance the profits, newspapers, TV and radio stations and Internet corporations give as much time and spaces as possible to report scandals. In addition, desire of finding the truth is a born attribution of human beings. All of these lead to the result that majority's attention are drawn to the scandals.
However, when comes to the real usage in some specific areas such politics and academy, it is principles or laws rather than scandals itself that facilitate the advancement. There are thousands of kinds of laws in the society ruling people's activities. As mentioned above, scandals are mistakes. So, when the famous or important people break laws, scandals are turned out[exposed]. That means no matter if scandals are know by the public, or the public are very interested in scandals, the ruler breaker would certainly be punished by corresponding laws. From the earlier Watergate scandal, Clinton sex scandal to the recent Italian football scandal, it is exist laws not the public that define how to punish such activities. The scandals only serve to satisfy the need of the public to know the truth and it is laws and rules that guarantee the advancement of the specific areas.[有一点不能忽视的是无论是Nixon or Clinton都是受到了舆论的压力的,而且Clinton是被定为无罪的,对他的指控没有成立,他的下台只是因为丑闻给他的声誉和政绩都蒙上了阴影]
Moreover, exaggerating the function of scandals and excessively reporting scandals may distort the appearance of a people and to be worse, prevent the development of the society. The former president of the world bank Wolfowitz, abdicated because of the girlfriend gate scandal. However, not long ago, when he visited a place taking off his shoes, his broken socks are appeared to people. Furthermore, during his position, he did great contribution to the economic development of the world. So, if only focus on his mistake, people mustn't know how Wolfowitz really is. Additional, there are many issues in society requiring people's attention. Therefore, to[too] much emphasize on scandals would make people have no interest to aware other issues, which might be more emerge. In the long run, the development of the society is lowered.[good viewpoint!]
In sum, under proper consideration, scandals can fulfill the public's need to know the truth. As for other tasks, they are not the scandals' business.[结尾草率]
