TOPIC: ISSUE26 - "Most people would agree that buildings represent a valuable record of any society's past, but controversy arises when old buildings stand on ground that modern planners feel could be better used for modern purposes. In such situations, modern development should be given precedence over the preservation of historic buildings so that contemporary needs can be served."

The speaker asserts that old buildings represent a significant record of any society's past, however, when facing the conflict between the preservation of old buildings and modern development, the privilege should be lay on meeting the needs of contemporary development. I do agree with the speaker that old buildings deserve high attention for their historical value, nevertheless, we should get down to the actual case on its own terms referring to the contradiction between the maintenance of old buildings and the needs for modern improvement, and considerate the merits and demerits of both sides.

First of all, we have to admit the great importance of old buildings in regard of its function as the loyal record of any society's history. Thanks to those old buildings, can we learn the exact fact of special time period of human history and make use from it. As to anthropologists, they can explore the certain experience of human development and court to the essential of an unknown culture. The discovery of Pompeii is a good case in point, Pompeii , which was destroyed by a fierce volcano eruption and buried deep in earth for almost 2000 years, once hit the world for its amazing preservation of architecture and the outline of the glorious society which has been the most brilliant one in Roman Empire, all of which, in an anthropologist' eyes , vividly indicate the social lives and the unique cultural characteristics. For architects, the old buildings provide them mass information about the architectural styles and functions during specific time periods which would offer more inspiration to their creative minds. With the cases presented above, we can easily draw the conclusion that old building are of great importance to give us good means to recognize the real face of history and drive us to make good use of them.

In addition, old buildings can also serve as the identification of certain culture, some of which are viewed as the representative of the characteristic culture of different countries, and at the same time, they would bring economic benefits and contribute to the native tourism industry. As we all know, diverse old building of different countries stands the various culture background, which can be used to distinguish each unique culture. For instance, the Great Wall is hold as the very symbol of China as the A is regarded in France. In addition, old buildings can bring considerable economic incomes in the realm of tourism industry while they would also contribute to promote the domestic culture to the world as a whole. For this matter, old building is undoubtedly necessary for us to devote ourselves to the pursuit of their preservation.

However, facing the conflict of the preservation of old buildings and the current development, it is really not a straightforward process for us to determine. We should keep an objective mind to evaluate the advantage and the disadvantage to both sides. If the aim of modern activity on the ground of old buildings is to address the private interests that limited in a small group of people, then , we should oppose the destruction of old buildings . On the other hand, if the project has crucial meanings for the development strategy of the whole country, we would modestly choose to sacrifice certain buildings with less historical value. Besides, we should also make an all out effort to search for other ways to mutual benefit of old buildings and modern development ,such as employing subway system to deal with the problems in traffic, rather than toppling older buildings for pavement. Simply put, we should not make any hasty determination to dispose the contradiction of old building and current needs.

In sum, old buildings deserve our high emphasis for their significant value in historical study, identifying the unique culture, bringing economical interests and representatives of countries. When they are controversial with the modern evolution, we should hold the objective view and try to eliminate the conflicts rather than acting as the speaker that blindly give privilege to current needs.

1、I think you should pay more attention to the precision and variety of expression--especially around the focus of the article,as well as some syntax foibles. :-)
2、听说we I这种词应该少出现,显得有点不客观，呵呵
