ARGUMENT26(419 words)
The following appeared in a memo from the chairperson of the school board in the town of Saluda.
"For the past five years, Mr. Charles Schade has been the music director at Steel City High School, and during that time the school band from Steel City High has won three regional band competitions. In addition, the quality of the music rehearsal facilities and musical instruments at Steel City High has improved markedly over the past five years. Because of such successes at Steel City High, the Saluda school board should hire Mr. Schade to plan and direct the general music education programs for the entire Saluda school system."

提纲:
1、同时性因果错误:没有足够的证据表明三次区域比赛胜利的直接原因是CS担任了音乐教学主任;
2、即使上述原因正确,SC学校的音乐设备和乐器的改善也不能归功于CS。只要资金充足且学校对音乐足够重视,任何学校都可以办到;
3、即便SC学校获奖以及乐器设备的改善确实与CS有关,让CS来其规划和指导整个S的学校系统的音乐教育计划不一定行得通。

In this memo the chairperson of Saluda school board recommend that they should hire Schade, the music director at Steel City High School, to plan and direct the whole district's general music education programs. To substantiate his recommendation, he cites that the Steel's school band has won three regional awards and the school's music rehearsal facilities and musical instruments improved notably over the past five years when Schade is in tenure. On the surface, it may seem an attractive suggestion; however, a further reflection reveals that it lends little support for the recommendation.

To begin with, the chairperson unfairly attributes the three awards to Schade’s ability and effort. Lacking any remarkable evidence to confirm this assumption, it entirely possible that these accomplishments are the results of all music teachers’ efforts, or the results of abilities and efforts of some students. Merely attribute this reputation to only one person will overlook and depressed other teacher’s enthusiasm. Therefore, without ruling out other possible reason why the band won the awards the chairperson cannot convince me that Schade has the abilities and should be appointed to this job.

Even if the fact that chairperson cited is true, it will still be improper to attribute to Schade the improvement of school’s music rehearsal facilities and instrument. It is most probably that the improvements were the results of other administrator’s efforts. By the way, any school could do such improvement only if the funds are sufficient and more emphasis is pressed on music. So this should not be the critic reason for the chairperson to support the hire of Schade.

Even if Schade is responsible to the improvements mentioned in the memo, it still would be a problem to hire Schade, not some other person, to plan and direct the entire district’s general music education programs. First, the job of direct a school’s music and the whole district are too different. Work in Steel school is specific, but work of the whole district needs skills of macro grasp. Second, even if Schade is well qualified, perhaps someone or more other individuals would be even more suitable for the job. Without addressing these possibilities, the chairperson cannot convince me that the district should hire Schade.

From what had been discussed above, we may safely draw the conclusion that the memo is unpersuasive as it stands. To make this argument more convincing, the chairperson must provide clear evidence that Schade has the abilities and is the very person more qualified than other to posses this job.
