TOPIC: ISSUE185 - "Scandals-whether in politics, academia, or other areas-can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could."

1丑闻能让我们注意一些严重的问题,比如学术腐败
2然而丑闻会转移人们的注意力,使一些更紧迫的社会问题被忽略了
3一些人滥用丑闻,以此来达诋毁对手的名声
Are scandals useful in many areas, as the speaker maintains? I admit that they can focus our attention on problems that no speaker or reformer ever could, however, in my view both overestimating scandals and abusing them would bring about counterproductive effects.

Admittedly, there is no doubt that scandals can call our attention on some serious problems which speaker or reformer could not. One need look no further than the academia scandals in our society. Although many reform programs are taken into practice to put an end to academia decay, some professionals still plagiarize other’s ideas and fruition or fabricating experiment statistics to get their personal interests. The result is that many of them gradually lose their original ability and preciseness to the science, thereby cultivate similar students. Only when their scandals were disclosed to public, can the faculty take the problem seriously and does some effective deal to purify the academic environment, such as redistribute the limited research funds to honest scientists. Without revealing the academia scandals, our academic environment would be decayed and lose the competence in the world.

However, scandals can also play a negative role to the progress of society. On the one hand they are inherently attractive to human being, thereby they can easily distract our attention from some more emergent problems. For example, when Bill Clinton, the former president of America involved into a sex sandal, his sex sandal was published as the front news in the newspapers of the entire world. At the same time, media seemed unwilling to focus on other serious social problem such as Greenhouse effect and military crisis in Middle East. When scandals of individuals fade other more urgent social problems, the potential harm they can inflict on society far outweigh their potential benefits.

One the other hand, we find by overstating the usage of scandals some cabals on a slippery slope towards abusing scandals to ruin their opponents' reputation. It is particularly true when it comes to the election campaigns. In some areas, each candidate is so busy finding their opponent's scandals before election in order to win the votes. Lacking evidence to show their opponents are involved in political scandals or economical scandals, they may forge some mendacious personal ones to slander others and the victims have no recourse. In doing so, neither of the two sides would gain any respect or admiration from public, and the societal arena would become a chaos and disharmonious battle field.

In conclusion, scandals can reveal the unbeknown problems to public and then promote the progress of society, however abusing scandals can not only distract public attentions form those more urgent problems to some unimportant affairs but also bring about physically and psychologically detriment to the victims.
