能够保持教师思想的鲜活，会变成一个古板，落伍的教师。在适当的时候，能够有鲜活生动的例子，比如做无线网络的人，能够告诉学生无限传感器网络在森林环保，海洋生态，甚至作战方面的实力，告诉学生这些技术的激动人心之处，以及目前还存在的缺陷。
能激发自己的学术灵感，知道最前沿的技术，前沿的应用，或者是发现一些以往人们并没有注意到的应用。并且和更多的专业人士进行交流和探讨。自己在学术成就上的提高，也能给学生教授更多的知识，带他们体验更好的项目，以及参加国际学术会议的机会等。
即使是文学艺术类的专业，也可以参加一些社会工作，因为艺术来源于生活。
当然教师主要的工作还是学术和教育，这些工作应该以为这两个目的服务为中心，不要在学术外花过多的时间，而轻重颠倒。

I strongly agree with the statement. At the college and university level, all faculties should be required to spend some time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the course they teach. Because academic is rooted in the real world and daily life, the faculty should not become some sort of hermit in the tower of ivory. Doing some work outside the academic world will benefit their academic work and teaching.

Firstly, to do work outside academic world will prevent the teacher from degrading into an out-dated, boring one or even an eccentric, thereby enabling them to teach better. At classes, they can present the students with practical, real-world examples of the principles and theories discussed in the text-books. Let’s take a professor who is studying and teaching courses relevant to wireless censor networks for example. He has recently engaged in some wireless censor network project which was designed to collect the real-time data within certain area under the sea. The environmentalists can use these data to monitor the state of the sea so as to protect the environment. In the class, he provides the students an insightful analysis of the project, telling them the exciting ideas and technology applied, and the remaining disadvantages in the project, to help the students comprehend the principles and theories better, and to broad their views.

Secondly, by getting in touch with more real life projects, and meeting with more professionals carrying conflicting ideas and profound insights, the professor can broad his view, and even experience a brainstorm. Moreover, plentiful practical experience can boost a professor's credibility as an expert in the field. Also, by making more friends in the relevant field, he can make progress even faster. For example, by enrolling in an important project in a company, a computer professor in my university thought of a creative way to enhance the safety of network inside a company. He then had a chance to make a speech at a top international network conference and his opinion was recognized by many authorities in the field. His advancement in the academic field will certainly benefit his students.

Although many people may admit that working outside the academic world is beneficial for professors in most science, engineering and arts specialties, such as computer science, chemistry, and finance. Some may doubt if it's the same for professors in such specialties as the math, art and literature. In my opinion, art and literature is deeply rooted in life. If a professor gets in touch with various kinds of people and gets to know their lives, or if he goes to a place where the scenery is very beautiful and inspiring, he may find good materials and inspiration and create amazing works. Then he can share his experience and his work with his students.

In sum, spending some time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the course the university faculties teach is very beneficial for the students and also for their own improvement.
