Issue39
The intellectual benefits of attending a university or college are vastly overrated: most people could learn more by studying and reading on their own for four years than by pursuing a university or college degree.

Begin:
The speaker contends that the intellectual benefits in higher education is highly overrated and it is unnecessary to go to colleges because one could learn much more by studying and reading on their own.  However, in my observation, I could not agree with the speaker in that he underestimated the function of universities and colleges and overlooked the self-learning capibilities capabilities of most people.

From the aspect of the educational institutes, higher education, also called the tertiary education, is a non-compulsory level of education during which one could develop him or herself towards a foundation degree qualification.  The educational methods of higher education in colleges and unversities universities were mostly carefully designed by the Education Commitees Committees based on the experiences of several years' education.  And these methods are proved to be effective and adaptive to most students through the education experiments done in several colleges and universities in the past few years.  On the other hand, those who insist to study on their own will have to spend a lot of time to make a great plan for their study.  Although the plan might be adaptive for themselves, who knows it would be effective?  In another word, the student is making an experiment on himself on the bets of his own future.  If he is lucky to win, certainly, a bright future is in front of him.  Otherwise, if he loses the game, he would be losing his whole life.

During the education in colleges, students have enough chances to utilize expensive equipments for their academic study.  A library-full of books would be a great source for the search of useful material for writing their paper.  The tutors are always open and kind enough to answer your questions.  These access are always easily found in the unversities universities and colleges.  However, an individual will hardly get these chances because of the constrant restrict of his financial ability.  Although it might be possible to get what he wants to read in the public libraries, it is still unrealistic to open public laboraries laboratories for those out-of-school learners to do experiments.

Furthermore, it would not be easy to solve all of their questions by themselves because the thought one person is always limited.  In the colleges, when you are studying among your classmates, you would have enough chances to discuss problems and learn together.  Sometimes loneliness will also be a strong enemy against one's study.  For example, when a person is learning by himself and finds a question at the very beginning of a book he is reading, it would take him a very long time to find the result of the question.  However, this process sometimes really weakens the individual's will for study because the efforts he took to learn this subject is out of his expectation.  On the other hand, if he is studying with a couple of classmates in college, new ideas could make up for this.

Admittedly, there are some great persons, such as Bill Gates, Einstein, etc., who achieved great successes without a bachelor degree.  However, asserting the higher education in universities and colleges unnecessary is kind of hasty.  Because the great successes of these people are due to their strong studying will and sometimes their luck, as is discussed in the second paragraph.  Anyway, not every one could be a combination like them.  Most people need a common eduation education process.  And it is those colleges and universities that helped them find the way of achieving.  In another word, it is the safest way.  In most developed countries a high proportion of the population (up to 50%) now enter higher education at some time in their lives.  This figure strongly illustrates that we need university education and the society need it, too.

Economic progresses need talents.  Higher education is therefore very important to national economies, both as a significant industry in its own right, and as a source of trained and educated personnel for the rest of the economy.  When you are considering whether you could learn more by yourself out of the unvisities universities and colleges, thing of the above discussed.  And you will find how effective, convenient, and safe college education could be.
