TOPIC: ISSUE191 - "Education should be equally devoted to enriching the personal lives of students and to training students to be productive workers."
WORDS: 645          TIME: 0:42:11          DATE: 2007-8-4

Should education be equally devoted to enriching personal lives and workers-training, as the speaker asserts? I tend to disagree. As I see, in different levels the goal of education varies, and even in the same level of education, in different schools the emphasis should also varies.

In lower education systems, like junior school, grade school, and part high schools, I fundamentally disagree with the claim that education should be devoted half to training students to be productive workers. In my view, in this level of education, very little, if not, attention should be given to training students for future jobs. I base my opinion on the fact that one of the most basic and significant purpose of education is to help a child develop into a whole person, which can only or at least more easily fulfilled in lower level of education. It is when men or women are young that they may be more likely to accept those values and moral standards that we indulge into them. And at the same time school should offer more activities to help them develop their interest and those skills used in daily life. In the other side, if school put much attention on some kinds of job-training, educators are losing the chance of provide the society with whole and well-developed persons but merely working machines.  While, by claiming this I do not mean that school should not offer programs to help students to choose their future careers of majors in college, and I think it is need but this should be separated with job-training. After all, I do not think education at lower level should be devoted to job-training at all.

When it comes to higher education, like college and university, the speaker's assertion has merit to some extent. The reason I support this lies in another goal of education, especially for higher education, that is, to provide every kinds of workers, employees, experts and specialized engineers for society. Today's society demands kinds of skilled and well-educated people, particularly those endeavors like IT and services. Since, most employers are not quite likely to systemically train youngsters from beginning for the consideration of cost, time and market competition, then the task of training worker and employees must bee done by education systems. For example, colleges and universities should offer some courses on those skills that students may use in future careers like computers, communication, writing and so forth. So I agree with the speaker that attention should be given on training students to be productive workers and employees.

Meanwhile, education at high level should also emphasize on enriching the personal lives of students. Students, no matter how specialize in any field, are  still individuals in society, so in order to have a better life in future career they should keep their own interests. Otherwise, unsatisfying life may hamper their productivity in job places. Moreover, enriched personal lives in campus may help students maintain some skills that are needed in future jobs, like how to communicate with others, how to cooperate in teams, and how to deal with colleagues. Besides, various clubs, parties and activities could help to release students from their demanding study and learning and thus promote their quality of learning indirectly. But, whether the effect spent on enriching personal lives and on job-training should be equal can not determined generally, in different colleges and universities the condition should be determined based on the characters of each one.

To sum up, the speaker's claim has merit insofar as in higher education. In my view in lower education effort should be mostly, if not all devoted into enriching personal lives of students. Moreover, even if in higher education, it is unreasonable to equally devote efforts, but instead, to devote on the basis consideration of different situations of each school.
