题目:ISSUE186 - "Practicality is now our great idol, which all powers and talents must serve. Anything that is not obviously practical has little value in today's world." 字数:375 用时:00:45:00 日期:2007-8-13 17:19:44 Our modern society pays much more attentions on practicality than any ages in the history. However is it reasonable to invest all human energy and exertion only into the practical things? Is pracality an only standard to determine the value of any thing? The answers are definitely no. Since the existence of human beings relies on the material stuffs such as food and clothes, the pursuit of practicality is necessary throughout our history while it becomes more brilliant in modern ages. This is especially true when it comes to science and technology in which numerous inventions are emerging under the motivation of practicality. For example, the plane is designed to improve the speed of traveling and one of greatest invention in our time-Internet is to meet the calling for communicating quickly. The practicalities on which millions of time and workforce are spent indeed benefit the whole human beings. However, it is dangerous for practicality to absorb all of our attentions while we don't care about any other thing. The most important thing we cannot forget is the inner need of human beings- the emotional communication, the spiritual pursuits which cannot only be meeted by practicality. Take history for example. Although it seems useless and out-of-date to study history, we can learn much from our ancestors, extract wisdom to solve our current problems and gain courage especially when facing a crucial decision. In the same way, there are many other things rather than practicality play a crucial role in our ages, including belief, region and arts. Furthermore, even if in the realm of science and technology, there are still some researches whose values cannot be judged by the current view of practicality. For an instance, many countries invest millions of research grants in exploring the outside university despite the obscure picture and benefits it may bring. Since these researches may be in the fist stage during its development they are hardly to be applied into the practical use. Aside from the necessary pursuit of practicality, we still cannot stop the spiritual pursuit which is the counterpart of practicality. In addition, we cannot limit our view by the current practicality since the long-term interests also should be taken into accounts for the development of human beings.
