I agree with the assertion that it will be helpful to spend time working outside the academic world related to their teaching courses for the faculty for that it can help them improve the quality of their lesson at college and university. Nevertheless, it is too hasty to generalize this argument to include all the faculties as the author’s assertion because it is not necessary and practically possible for all faculty to do so. Furthermore, attaching too much importance to the activities outside will affect their work in college and university (often has the opposite affect of what was intended or hoped for).
First,(Few will dispute that that) it is critical for the faculty to work on the projects or make some investigation relevant to the courses they teach, which can present several merits that cannot be made in college or university.(holds several advantage over only work within college or university) First, it will help the teacher keep up with the latest development in the area they are working in. This is even (especially) true when it comes to the current world in which the developments in every area have go far beyond the anticipation of the authorities in these area thanks to the great achievement in science and technology. The teachers, who working in the schools, will surprisingly find there is a disjoint or lag between what they teaching and what they actually are (what they are teaching lag behind the current development). Taking part in the practical activities related to their principle will help narrow the gap. Second, the teachers, by bringing what they learned in the projects or investigation to their students who are more interested in the practical subjects than the abstract knowledge (conceptions and theories) of the textbook, can spark the passion of students in these principles. It is highly possible these passions render the students studying more actively and even making a decision to devote their whole life in this area. Third, more often than not, the problems or the difficulties they meet in the process of their practice or the feed back from the engineers and workers will provide some perfect subjects for their further research works. The biggest problem once troubled the faculty in the college or university is they cannot find a appropriate research subjects or direction because they don't know what is most needed and most worthwhile, thus it is practically meaningful for the teacher to collect these problems and do certain research in them, even a little breakthrough can benefit the practical work significantly. These merits make faculty’s regularly working outside an inevitable part of their work.
However, the positive effects which (of) working outside are for several principles which related to the practical works, no matter have direct relation or indirect one. While there are other principles which are a little more related to pure theory work, logical analysis, primarily aim at exploring the unknown, the profoundness and the beauty, including the humanities, mathematics, philosophy and so forth. For these principles, it is highly unlikely that the practical working can provide much helps than merely serve as detrimental to there teaching and research work. In this situation it will be more effective to take some measure to improve their research environments and documents and build a free and comfortable research atmosphere.
Though the advantage of working outside is obvious, too much of such work will definitely hamper the teaching work in the college or university. This is especially true when it comes to some negative phenomena in the academic world that some professors spend to much time at their practical works in pursuit of economic interests derived from these works, which actually have turn into his business, at expense of less teaching and regular research in college or university. Thus it is necessary for the faculty to strike a delicate balance between teaching work and practical work outside to benefit their teaching work best.
In sum, practical activities related to the teaching work, for most principles, can serve as supplement and driving force for the teaching work in school, while be less effective for several other principles which have little bearing on practice. And in my view, the potential harm they can inflict on their regular teaching and research work will far outweighs their benefits when spend too much time on these activities. |
