题目:ISSUE 147 - "Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them."
字数:502 用时:0:45:00 日期:2007-9-3
I tend to fundamentally disagree with the assertion that tradition and modernization are incompatible. Admittedly some traditional ideas or customs are aberrant from the modernization, still there exist myriads of traditional things influence people's life and even these traditions are transformed into or even are mixed into modernization. Thus, my point of view is that people not necessarily choose between tradition and modernization, since they interact with each other and therefore are consistent substantially.
Foremost, it is true that some of traditional things are irrelevant with modernization, and sometimes they even go against the modern science and theories. Especially when it comes to the realm of science, this point seems clearer. For instance, medieval people tend to trust astrology, which they believe can explain them who they are, where they come from, and how they will be. It is no doubt that astrology is far away from the science: for it lacks of accurate evidence, logical judgment, and reasonable conclusion. Another example involves with alchemy, which asserts can turn other metals into gold. Its magic attracts a large amount of advocators who are crazy in pursuing the fortune. However, modern chemistry tells us that any element can never be turned into another element and thus the alchemy steps down to people's reminisce.
However, many traditional customs and ideas still remain completely. Since no matter how the material world changes, the spirit world of human might almost stay the same: sublime morality and deed are bound to be welcomed and receive high emphasis in any times. In ancient China, many thinkers advance their unique and brilliant theory on ethics, military, life and love. Confucius, a most famous thinker among them, emphasizes honesty, probity, and persistence, and this ideology has influenced Chinese people from generation to generation, even now Chinese people still highly accolade Confucius. Therefore, the old traditional things still can play a vital role in people's daily life.
Furthermore, modernizations apply traditions or even mixed them into the societal development. Socrates has marked: "Look out your own selves and find the spark of thought that God has put into every heart, which only you can kindle to a flame." This statement indicates that in order to acquire a better effect, education should take the different characters and advantages into consideration, which obviously shows the way to achieve a effective modern education. Besides, as the fashion is concerned, the cheong-sam, a kind of old-style Chinese clothes, becomes more and more attractive in the fashionable stage of the world. It is specially designed to show the women's slender twist, which is described in Chinese as "willow twist", and its delicacy win many women all over the world. So from Socrates and cheong-sam, we can conclude that traditional things are interacting closely with modernization in many areas.
In sum, tradition and modernization co-exist in a harmonious societal environment eventually. Furthermore, people can learn a series of knowledge and notions from the traditions and finally apply them to create a better world |
