Argument 2

"The following appeared in a letter sent by a committee of homeowners from the Deerhaven Acres to all homeowners in Deerhaven Acres.
"Seven years ago, homeowners in nearby Brookville community adopted a set of restrictions on how the community's yards should be landscaped and what colors the exteriors of homes should be painted. Since then, average property values have tripled in Brookville. In order to raise property values in Deerhaven Acres, we should adopt our own set of restrictions on landscaping and housepainting."

正文:
In this argument, the speaker concludes that homeowners who want to raise property values in Deerhaven Acres should adopt their own set of restrictions on landscaping and housepainting as homeowners did in Brookville seven years ago. To justify this conclusion the speaker points out the average property values have tripled in Brookville. However, this argument is flawed in several critical respects.

First, the speaker provides no assurances that the rising of property value in Brookville has a reliable correlation with the restrictions. Perhaps the average property values all over the country have tripled in the past seven years due the rapidly developed economic. Lacking such evidence the speaker simply can not draw any firm conclusions based on the situation that the property values of Brookville have been raising rapidly.

Next, the speaker has not adequately shown the situation of Deerhaven Acres to support the claim that it is necessary to do as what homeowners of Brookville did seven years ago. It is entirely possible that the property values in Deerhaven have risen even more rapidly than that of Brookville. Without comparison between Deerhaven and Brookville to illustrate that the average property values of the latter have been raising more rapidly that that of former, the speaker could not be able to convince me that similar restrictions in Deerhaven is needed. If the statistics shows that the property values of Deerhaven have been rising more rapidly, it is ridiculous to ask homeowners of Deerhaven to adopt such restriction.

Even assuming that property values of Brookville increases more rapidly than that of Deerhaven, the speaker’s advice of adopting similar restriction to raise property values is nevertheless unwarranted. If the property values in Brookville is very low seven years ago and remain much lower than that of Deerhaven even after the rapid rising as shown in the argument, the necessity to realize such restrictions unless further evidences explaining that similar situation will also happen in Deerhaven by adopting such restrictions.

Additionally, the interests of consumers’ to the landscaping of house may have changed during past seven years. It is possible that individuals then would tend to select houses in uniform styles, while individuals now tend to pay for those houses different from their neighbors. If homeowners of Deerhaven choose to uniform their house style, it is possible that their property values would stay stable or even decrease, instead of increasing rapidly as they supposed. Without the statistics to illustrate people tend to choose uniform houses, the speaker could not be able to convince me that the restrictions would be effective.

In sum, the speaker’s advice, adopting similar restrictions as Brookville, is ill convinced and poorly supported. To lend credibility to this advice, the speaker should provide the evidence that such restrictions will increase the property values in Deerhaven.
