TOPIC: ISSUE144 - "It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value."
*a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.
WORDS: N/A TIME: N/A DATE: 2008-1-28
In the realm of arts, there were always many valuable masterpieces remaining undiscovered until some critics illustrated them well to the public many years later. Though it might be a little late for public realize the importance of these masterpieces, the inside meaning and the ever-lasting value contained are still unchanged. So, in my point of view, it is the artists who create the values and contribute to the society, while the function of critics is just to discovery.
Critics, a kind of knowledgeable people, able to interpret the masterpieces of famous artists as well as goods from unknown artists, are introducing the abstruse values inside of some masterpieces to the public in a most simple way. They tell us who great artists are. We are perceived Van Gogh, Picasso as distinguished painters, Beatles as famous band, William Shakespeare as great poet. Besides, they also tell us why these "big man" are fabulous. They tell us the internal meanful values of Hamlet( By Shakespeare), that makes us not only enjoy the beauty of well-articulated words and the amazing story, but also acknowledge what the author want to reflect from the character of Hamlet. The critics act as a guidance of us. With comments from critics, we can fully, better understand the masterpieces, especially the meanful value inside the story.
However ,though critics are well-educated in some field, they still may make some mistakes in judging whether these goods are valuable enough to be appreciated by the publics. Because critics make their remarks based on their own understand, and maybe limited by the environment. Hundreds of years ago, current critics did not regard Van Gogh's paintings as treasures. Because of not being appreciated by that time, Van Gogh finished his life insane and was even sent into hospital. While 8 years before his death, people reexamined these paintings and found them of excellent values. Then those people, who want to learn paint, began to appreciate his paintings and even imitated his ways of painting. Just like him, they did not only paint for paint, but to paint for expressing some emotional ideas. All of these behaviors happened after people of that time found his strong emotions expressed in his paintings.
Critics would do the right interpretation, and the false ones. But the artist create the never-changing lasting values of his goods. .
Undoubtedly, it is the artists who created masterpieces with lasting values inside. Even without critics, these valuable ideas of masterpieces would become known by the public. As mentioned above, the internal meaning of Hamlet might be unknown to the public for sometime, but when people read this article again and again. They would be sure to find what the author wants to tell us by the story. No matter what the critics commented, the lasting value of the masterpieces remains the same. Paintings of Van Gogh can not be appreciated for one time, but would be set as treasures some day later. Apart from that, in some cases, the lasting values are easily accepted by the society without the help of critics. When Martin Luther King addressed his speech, his words became easily remembered by the publics, and his idea of ethnical equality was also popularly accepted by the public. Without the propagation of critics' remarks, people can easily found the truth of the speech and the internal meaning of it. These examples just illustrate the idea as one proverb goes "golden will shine some day", that the lasting values inside the masterpieces are surely accepted by the public one day even without the critic.
In that way, comments of critics are doubtful. Whether it can reflect the truth remains to be discovered and proved by the history. The lasting values inside the masterpieces, however, remain unchanged with the change of views from critics, comments and times. When and under what conditions can the gold shine just remains as a matter of time. |
