Encouragingfaculties, especially the ones in science field, to do some work relevant totheir course outside academic world should be promoted because, in my point ofview, it can stimulate the curiosity and improve the quality of instruction byproviding student with more concrete, more palpable and more accessible knowledge.
Nowadays, text books in colleges and universities are teemed with theories andlogical deductions, and they're often taught in a somewhat abstractive mannerin order to provide the students with the general ideas of some particulartopics to which many college students feel repellent. They find the subjects either obsolete or hardly relevantto anything practical which will definitely discouragethe initiatives and curiosities of students. Thus, it's desirable for the faculties of colleges and universities to act likea bridgebetween theacademic world and the industrial world so as to provide the students with thefirst-hand, update-to-date and, most importantly, practical information. Thebest way for the faculties to achieve this goal is, of course, to spend sometime working in the profession fields. Instead of presenting a theory in normalway, one faculty maybe will introduce the theory by telling his or her ownexperience in work where the particular theory was applied, explaining why thetheory was adopted and demonstrating, if possible, the piratical effective ofthe theory. Presented with the theory in a concrete scenario and impressed withthe visible effect of the theory, the students are likely to get a palpable touchon the subject and acquire the excitement of possible achievement in the futureif they can apply the theory themselves, which contributes to thesuccessfulness of further and deeper learning on the subject.
Faculties who have experienced the professional lives outside the academicworld not only have the advantages at making the students more eager to learn, but also help students to master theknowledge better. Many college graduates have experience their awkwardnessin applying theknowledge taught in school and long transitional period from campus to company.Sometimes, the interval is so traumatic that they feel what they learn incollege or universities are just useless. Situation will be greatly improved iffaculties could spend some time in the company and then provide moreinstruction on practical use of the knowledge taught in class not just limitedon the theoretical aspect. At one hand, doing work which relevant to thecourses they taught will give faculties great opportunities of going through agreat many practical problems which their students may encounter in the nearfuture. At another hand, working with company colleagues who used to attendcollege or university course everyday provides faculties a way of direct feedbackand suggestion on the course taught in college. Both the own experience incompany and the feedback of formal students will instruct the faculties to makenecessary amendment to their current course so as to improve the quality ofinstruction in colleges and universities.
Apparently, the requirement of some familiarities with the world outside thecampus of faculties at the college and universities level prolongs the care forthe students to exceed the mere college period and the professional experiencesof faculties will certainly be beneficial at any stages of instructing incolleges and universities.
