ISSUE150 - "Because of television and worldwide computer connections, people can now become familiar with a great many places that they have never visited. As a result, tourism will soon become obsolete."
WORDS:565 DATE:11/2/2008
A recent survey developed by US News indicates that tourism websites has ranked 5th among the Top 20 websites web users in North American browse everyday. As a result, I agree with the author's opinion that people can now become familiar with a large quantities of places through TV and Internet, however, at the same time, it is totally wrong to affirm that tourism will soon become obsolete. Therefore, my attitude toward this topic is that though broadening people's sights, information or knowledge absorbed from television or computer cannot replace the exciting experience from tourism.
To begin with, notwithstanding that the highly developed devices will help us broaden our ken or horizon, we can better learn the culture and nature details with our own experience. Travelling programs in TV supply audiences nothing more than pictures or videos, through which generalizations and abstractions transfer to people who watch them. However, It is easily to ignore details, which are more likely to attract traveller. There is a well-known idiom that a man without going to the Great Wall loses the right to be called a man. In fact, as thousands of people have saw it many times, whether in TV or on the computer, they have shaped the impressions of Great Wall - a rather long wall standing on the mountain top. Nonetheless, if we let satisfaction prevent us to have a look at the real wall by ourselves, a lot of amazing details behind the general image will be neglected - why it should be built on the peak? Was it as long as what we see today at the beginning? How wide was it? Regardless of defence, what is its symbolic meaning? Rather than switch the television channel or click the mouse, people prefer tourism to attain more details.
Moreover, the devices may ignite our interests for viewing the famous places through tourism. To illustrate, I would like to take the National Geography as an example. There are countless beautiful and interesting pictures on both the journals and the official website, which even offer free video watching and downloading. Once on the website, I viewed a video of Tibet, in which the white ice mountain, the brimless grassland and the clean blue sky attract me. Whereas, not as the author of this topic imagined, I not only refused to give up the idea of travelling to Tibet one day, but also accelerated the idea to come true. Hence, those devices actually ignite our interests to have real travells.
What's more, since more and more work require all day's sedentary working, the need for outgoing is more crucial for people. Comparing watching TV or browsing web pages with tourism, we can easily find many advantages of tourism - getting a comprehensive release, touching the nature, doing additional research, and so on. Maybe one of the few merits of staying home watching TV or computers is that it seems to save money in short views.
Admittedly, however, people are using to watch television programs or searching through Google to guide their travelling plans. For introductions and suggestions supplied by those devices usually help tourists, we never dare to underestimate the functions of them.
In sum, judging from the reasons mentioned above, we can safely concluded that tourism will never become obsolete, although people can now become aware of a large quantities of places through TV and Internet.
