TOPIC: ISSUE36 - "The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries."
WORDS: 670          TIME: 00:45:00          DATE: 2008-2-20 16:20:05

The speaker asserts that the greatness of individuals could be decided only by those who live after them rather than their contemporaries. In my opinion, the speaker unfairly generalizes. Though in some areas, such as science, especially physical science, the great theories or findings should be tested over and over again before them can be confirmed, in many other areas, such as arts, politics, this is not the case. So, the final judgment should depend on a case-by-case basis.

First, when it comes to the realm of science, things usually act as speaker concludes. For all we know, science always aims at exploring the rules of  mysterious world, and seldom  feels free from doubt and suspicion, thus greatness in many scientific achievement should be tested over again by their next generations before them can be confirmed. On the one hand, along with the developing technical routes and further comprehension to the mysterious world, some wide-accepted theories might prove false. For a long period, for example, people believe that heavier objects fall faster. Galileo, who climbs the Leaning Tower of Pisa dropping several objects with various weights, generalized his experiment to the Law of Free Fall. On the other hand, owing to many kinds of limitations of contemporaries, some hypothesis used to consider as absurd might be justified by subsequent facts. Consider, for instance, Einstein Theory of Relativity and Copernicus's Geocentric Theory. People at that time would never suppose that these two theories were the most important foundation of physical science now while nearly leaded the two scientists to death once upon a time.

Secondly, when it comes to the art world, the final judgment varies from case to case. One side, in the areas of arts according with common preference, such as symphony and painting in the main-stream type, artists, as Beethoven and Picasso, always earn their popularities and affirmation from the contemporaries. Nevertheless, in the areas of arts with specific and strange characteristics, as the judgment from the contemporaries usually influenced by many other factors, such as religious force, culture background and so forth, many of great artists who we admire now died in obscurity. The most convincing example is Van Gogh. At Van Gogh's time, realism in the realm of painting stands in the highest flight, therefore the contemporaries generally were hard to accept the conception of Van Gogh's postimpressionism. Another example is Igor Stravinsky, famous artist of orchestra, who is now seen as the musical counterpart of painter Picasso. When his "rites of spring" was firstly showed in the stage, the Parisian audience, however, rioted. Therefore, in short, whether the greatness of artist could be decided by the contemporaries depends on whether their specialized fields could be accepted by them.

Whereas, in the politics and business areas, fewer tragedies are revealed, which better explain why the speaker goes to the extreme. As the individuals in charge of any political or business departments are responsible to solve practical problems and crisis as quickly as they can, which are always highly associated with contemporary situation and environment, their every achievements are also easy to comprehend and decide by their contemporaries, who are far more competent to estimate than the persons studying it from historical book. For instance, Roosevelt's New Deal dealing with the great economic depression in 1930s worked well and successfully helped American recovering rapidly in the coming years. Thus, President Roosevelt was considered as one of the greatest leaders in the American history not only by historians but also his citizens at that very time. Besides, nowadays most leaders in field of political or business should be reelected every four or five years, and this also proves that judgment of greatness in these two areas is fit for arising from contemporaries.

All in all, final judgment of the greatness of individuals is a matter varying from case to case. In the field of science and arts accord with common preference, the judgment should be taken by those who live after them. While in other areas, political, business and some specific types of arts, contemporaries are more competent to decide in their initial stages.

The speaker asserts that the greatness of individuals could be decided only by those who live after them rather than their contemporaries. In my opinion, the speaker unfairly generalizes (vt. 加宾语 ...generalizes his or her conclusion). Though in some areas, such as science, especially physical science, the great theories or findings should be tested over and over again before them can be confirmed(before them can be…感觉有点问题,them该为they?! 何不整体改为before their final confirmations), in many other areas, such as arts(the value of real arts is more often than not appreciated by people after them, 个人观点,且看你论), politics, this is not (always) the case. So, the final judgment should depend on a case-by-case basis.

First, when it comes to the realm of science, things usually act as speaker concludes. For (For or As ?! ) all we know, science always aims at exploring the rules of  mysterious world, and seldom  feels free from doubt and suspicion, thus greatness in many scientific achievement should be tested over again by their next generations before them can be confirmed.
