I fundamentally agree with the author's assertion that the destiny of society is decided by how the children are socialized, but I think the author is too pessimistic about our education nowadays. I hold the opinion that we can educate the children to become the person who is good for the society despite that a number of problems exist in our education system.

The destiny of society is decided by how children are socialized. As Franklin Roosevelt said, "We cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build the youth for the future." The youth is our future. In my opinion, the term "socialize" means education, including getting the basic skills, knowledge, morals and so on. On the one hand, if they are socialized properly, they can dedicate to the society. For example, taught life skills such as analysis, logical thinking, synthesis, and creative thinking, they get access to the ability to survive in the society. Got the knowledge such as physics, chemistry, mathematics, etc, they can understand how the complex and changing world works, and find the right position in the world. If they obtain the morals: honesty, fairness, individual responsibility, patriotism, and belief in the principle of liberty, equality, they will understand what they can do and can not, and will have a right standard of behavior. On the other hand, if they are socialized falsely, they would do great harm to the society. Nowadays, our world is full of various adverse factors such as sex, violence, and lost of belief. The juvenile delinquency is a serious problem in our society. The adolescent without good education become an unfortunate victim of adverse circumstances, deprived of the opportunity to pursuit their own ideal and happiness.

I'm an optimist as regard to whether we can educate the good citizen for our society. We develop the personality of the individual and the significance of his life to people around. We provide them the life skills such as rational thinking, critical thinking, and the ability to analyze, all of which are conductive to dispose whatever difficulties life may presents in their later lives. We transmit them democratic value, equality of opportunity, personal responsibility, so that all of them can tell right from wrong.

Admittedly, there are a lot of problems which we should take into account in the education system. Firstly, our education doesn't provide the equal start for all the children. The compulsory school attendance is still non-existent in numerous backward and poor nations. Education today is a matter of monetary means. Only the family with enough financial power could enable the children to receive the good education. Secondly, our education ignores the full development of a growing personality. Rarely a child grows up under the ever-present attention of his parents. Moreover, they are neglected by parents result from pressure of making a living. Therefore, they lack the necessary attendance and guidance when they are confronted some problems during their early life. Thirdly, we did little to protect them from the adverse circumstances. Today the media a powerful educator to our children and transmits so many harmful messages which will hamper the development of their personality.

In sum, the destiny of society is determined by how the youth are socialized. Overall we can provide the children good and helpful education, equipping them for life, helping bring a better society, in spite of a lot of problems which we have to settle in the education.
