WORDS: 549 TIME: 00:45:00 DATE: 2008-4-6 18:06:37
The relationship of tradition and modernization is a complicated issue for us to dicuss. With the high speed of modernization of our world, many conventions have been broken or converted to other forms. In my point of view, tradition and modernization have both the compatible and incompatible aspects within them. Solely describes the relationship of them as incompatible is assertive. Each pair of tradition and modernization should be concerned separately rather then tell all the cases in one sentence.
With the long time of our history, the high diversity of race, geography and ideology of humankind has developed many different kinds of customs. Some of these customs still be present until now. People from different places keep their customs to be distinguished with other groups. Since the industry revolution in 1848, more technologies have been developed in a much high speed of pace and those developed countries fulfilled modernization in a flash of time. After the World War II and the Cold War, our world kept in a peaceful condition which has been waited by all the normal individuals in the world. With this favorable situation of development, developing countries began to imitate the developed ones to become modernized. It is not weird to see some black men playing ragtime music under many skyscrapers in the United States and to see that the government of China wants to keep its high developing speed as well as keep the diversity of its 56 races in a single country. Thus, tradition and modernization became a pair of opposite issue which is more important now then ever before.
Let me talk about those which are compatible. Some kinds of the tradition does not oppose modernization of a country, and these kinds can or have transfered to another form in the modern world and have been mixed with modern technologies. Music is a typical example of this kind of tradtion. In ancient time, people in almost everywhere of the world play music for many purposes and fortunately. Some of this ancient music has been kept until now and then it is played in modern musical instruments. The ragtime music, which has been mentioned in my second paragraph, is one of this kind of music. Its origin dues to the Indians and now you can hear it in a DVD player. Another kind of tradition which are compatible with modernization is those can not be destroyed by it or something bad will happen. For example, the minority races in China wants to keep their traditions. Without this right, the unstability factor will be stimulated. In one word, some kinds of tradtions have the ability to survive in the impact of modernization and some kinds of them must be kept by modern world.
Next, with the quick pace of modernization, some kinds of tradition should be modified or even eliminated. Religion rituals are one of this kind of tradition. Although it is a much complex issue for us to discuss, we can make one example to explain it. Buddhists are not allowed to marry with others or receive high price gifts in the past. Now, in some places these two traditions of Buddha has been abolished.
Given my discussion above, the statement is absolute and something should be concerned more deeply to make a better one.
