69"Government should place few, if any, restrictions on scientific research and development"
Should government limit the research and development of science? I agree insofar as scientific research and development should not be affected by government's policy and government's interests. At some point, however, I think that government should place reasonable restrictions on scientific research and development.
Admittedly, development on science offers human beings a better society and improves their living conditions. It is human nature that when people are confronted with something mysterious and unexplainable, they become restless and even behave brutally to relief themselves. At the primitive stage of human history, almost the whole world seemed unaccountable and unexplainable to our ancestors, and they had no choice but resort to superstitions and religions for relief, which lead them to do lots of stupid and inhuman things such as burning children, eat women or killing some who had been cursed. As time passes by, people get more knowledge and begin the development of science, which helps them to disclose the veil of world and set up an cultivated society. Sometimes even people could not understand some mysterious things, they would not believe in superstitions. but to do more scientific researches to study things unknown. In this sense, development of science powers people to look more clearly about the world and then establish a better society.
On the other hand, scientific research and development endow people with the power to live in a more comfortable and convenient way. Due to the fast development of science, people live in a totally different way compared to 500 years ago. Now people could reach any continent in one day, while it cost Zheng He, a famous captain in China in Ming Dynast, 6 months to arrive Egypt from China. Besides, people could talk to their families however long they are apart with the help of internet and mobile phone. Such instances are numerous. Thus, science contributes to the better life of human.
The society would not be improved and people would not live in comfortable conditions, if government had restricted scientific research and development. In this view, government should not limit the research and development of science but to support them in finance and in policy.
However, the rapid development of science, which is disable and beneficial to a great extent, brings out problems and threats to human beings. Cloning technology, biochemistry weapons and nuclear weapons are all potential time bombs that may cause the society to collapse and what people are enjoying to be destroyed and even the distinct of human. Science, which is like a double-edged sword, fails to prospect society and better living conditions but to cause damages. Thus, government should regulate those improper developments and prevent the science destroying our society.
In sum, the development and research of science help people to explore world and themselves and then lead them to set up a better society and a more comfortable living conditions. But we need to develop science correctly unless what we do will destroy ourselves. Thus, government do not restrict the development and research of science reasonable, and over-restriction and no restriction would be both poison to our society and our human beings. |
