Issue153
"Students should bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study. They should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively."
Position: Agree. Students should always be ready to question what they learn.
1. One of the purposes of education is creating new knowledge. In order to do this, it is significant for students to doubt what we they learned.
2. Many curricula aim to reveal the laws of nature and seek the eternal orders of things. Some of them are physics, chemistry, biology and meteorology. There lie rules under seemingly unexplainable phenomenon. Although we have gained much about those, there still have something we do not know why. So it is important to question…
3. Other courses like art and history also needs skepticism.
Words:540

I strongly hold the point that students should learn to question what they see, what they hear and what they learn not only in the scientific fields, but also in the application scale. On the research and theory stage, skepticism drives the development of human knowledge and deepens the understanding of the nature. In other aspects, doubt reveals the real faces of seemingly confusing things.

In the first instance, suspicion drives scientific process. Science aims to seek the inner orders of nature, reveals the eternal laws of phenomenons which help us to fasten the rules of how things going to happen and then make good use of them. These rules determine that we can not go against them when we do something. But usually the rules just conceal deep in the back happening things which takes much effort for our predecessors to find them. For some things we have no idea why and how them happen in particular ways, only we can do is just to hypothesize and then raise a theory that can explain them at least, which of course we do not know true or false. So it is important for descendants to doubt about these uncertain theories and supposes. The theories and knowledge in most schoolbooks are mostly right, some of which, however, are not certain and confirmed. Even those seemly quite true in recent ages may be proved wrong or partly wrong. If students just passively accept them, they may not only be misled, but also be confused later.

In addition, education not only conveys knowledge and experiences, but also accumulate and create knowledge and theories. As the largest treasure of humanity, knowledge devotes to solving problems face us. So it is required absolute precise and accuracy, which needs students to doubt them at any time as long as what they learn is exactly right. If the students just accept them passively without the spirit of questioning, the faults and mistakes concealing behind the seemly quite right theories, which may cause serious problems or even bring about severe disasters when these theories are used. Except for science field, this is also true with other to some extent less "precise" courses such as art, history and biology. Take history for example. History at some stage like a container full of stories and affairs happened in human history which, some people may argue, can not be doubted. However, I insist that history conceals even more uncertainness among those sounds interesting and true stories happened in the past. So it is quite significant for students to bring sufficient skepticism for what they have been told by history classes. However, this is not easy for history learners due to the fact that  history is one of the most controversial issues in the world which different countries may have quite distinct history schoolbooks printed to public. Under such condition, spirits of skepticism play vital role in the studying processes.

All in all, I consider spirits of always ready to doubt and to explorer what are going to be transmitted to students very impressive temperament. And it is also necessary for learners and explorers to bear such skills, which I may say, one of the most important fundamental abilities we should cultivate.

Science aims to seek the inner orders of nature, reveals the eternal laws of phenomenons which help us to fasten the rules of how things going to happen and then make good use of them. These rules determine that we can not go against them when we do something(in any related situations). But usually the rules just conceal deep in the back happening things which takes much effort for our predecessors to find(justify) them. For some things we have no idea why and how them happen in particular ways, only we can do is just to hypothesize and then raise a theory that can explain them at least, which of course we do not know true or false. So it is important for descendants to doubt about these uncertain theories and supposes.
