Issue 50. "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."
(为了改善大学的教学质量,所有的教员都应该被要求花一定时间到学术领域以外去参加和他们所教科目相关的工作。)

Syllabus:
1.        教学质量的提高不是一个单纯的问题,有很多因素影响。如:教师素质、教学条件、学术知识积累、学术气氛,甚至天才人物的出现等。要求所以的教员都参与学术领域外的与其科目相关的工作,将问题过于简单化。
2.        学科分类:应用型学科(经济学、临床医学、法律、机械制造等)和基础研究型学科(理论物理、基础医学、天文学等)。前者需要做相关工作。好处:理论结合实践,体现应用价值;掌握社会就业动态,给学生以指导;根据社会需要,制定和优化教学课件,更好的教学。后者,则不需要,也不太容易在社会找到相关工作。他们的重点是优化研究条件,拓展研究领域,更好的搞研究,以提供理论支撑。
3.        过分强调社会工作,会分散教师精力,可能造成部分教师在外抓效益的现象,不能集中精力搞教学,而削弱了本质工作,反而影响教学质量。
总之,既要鼓励应用型学科教师在社会的工作,又要严格控制。保证教学质量,同时,以教学为主,社会工作为辅,目的是为了提高教学质量,而非经济利益。

How to improve the quality of education is a complex problem, which can be affected by multiple factors, such as, the quality of faculty, sufficient teaching facilities, long-term academic accumulation, free and tolerant academic atmosphere, even good-timing birth of geniuses and so forth. The stator oversimplifies the problem by simply require all the faculty of universities to get job related to their teaching courses out of their academic realm.

To begin with, there are two main kinds of disciplines; one is discipline of application, such as, laws, economics, clinical medicine and so on. Another is discipline of basic study, like basic medicine, theoretical physics, history of literature and so forth. For the former, which emphasis on the application of knowledge, teacher in these fields should go to work outside their academic world. To the former, for one reason, that teachers should work in relevant fields outside is what they teach in university must be administered into the real life. By practical experiences, that teachers can know whether their courses are truly practicable. For example, a teacher who teaches surgery mush at least be a surgical doctor who have sufficient experience in operation. If he is not, how does he know whether the methods he imparts to students can work well in a real operation? Fresh minds and innovational views are extremely important to teachers, which must vary consequently with the development of the world outside. Secondly, teachers can optimize their courses after getting familiar to what kind of students the society demands, consequently, to appeal more students to gather interested in the subjects and have definitely orientation to culture students’ abilities. Furthermore, by investigating the dynamic situation about career, teachers of applicable subjects can give proper direction and alternative suggestions to students on choosing their job after graduation.

To the later, it’s difficult for them to find a apposite position correlated to their own study fields. Astronomy is just a appropriate case. Due to the narrowly special knowledge concerning to astronomy, most people cannot comprehend it. There is nearly no places for astronomers to work outside their discipline. Another example, teachers of basic medicine who do researches about RNA interference or gene, also command sheer professional knowledge that is not easy for them to leave labs and work outside. For them, there are still lots of ways to improve quality of teaching, such as, advance the teaching environment, extend researching field, keep pace with the newest information of researching and so on.

However, overemphasis on working in society, sometimes can lead the opposite way of improving educational quality. It is very possible for some teachers to pursue material benefits rather than concentrating on improving their teaching in university. Consequently, the essence of teaching responsibility will be fatally weakened, which can be antagonistic to students and improvement of teaching quality.

In my opinion, I do deem that teachers in applicant disciplines should be encouraged to work which is tied up to their subjects outside their professional world. Simultaneously, relevant rules should be carried out to prevent negative effects happening. So that work outside can be subordination to teaching itself and a guarantee can be made that educational quality can be truly improved.

总得来说,文章的结构和条理都比较清晰,而且能在一个小时左右完成的,已经很不错啦。
语言方面,注意不要把名词当作形容词或动词来用。
