------题目------
Practicality is now our great idol, which all powers and talents must serve. Anything that is not obviously practical has little value in today's world.
------正文------
I concede that practicality is our first option when considering many choices in our everyday lives. But we should not ignore things that are impractical such as ethics, values and so on.
Admittedly, pragmatism is our great idols which all powers and talents must serve. It serves as the survival line for people. In the realm of education, students regard the practical major as a tool to seize a job after graduation. Without this practical viewpoint, they are afraid of losing jobs; in the realm of business, the leaders of companies view making profit as the first aim. Without the profit, the company is to extinct; in the realm of politics, the political candidates try their best to acquire more support from their constituency in order to be reelected and elected. In all the areas above, the pragmatism plays an important role in people's lives.
However, we should not only consider the practical aspects, some other impractical respects should also be taken into our consideration. From a larger span, if we merely take into account, which condition will limit our development even lead to a wrong direction.
Firstly, in the realm of education, over-practicality will result in the stubborn thinking. The aim of the education to prepare the students for all-round persons. If we only focus on the majors that may find a good job after graduation, we may ignore many other subjects such as arts, music and so forth. We may aim at higher scores, which will make the education dumb-down learning. And the good qualifying merits which we appraise such as creative thinking will go to hell. The society need all kinds of students who are good at different subjects and the over-practicality may make the world only black and white.
Secondly, in the realm of business, over-practicality may make the company ignore some social responsibility. Whether making profit is the prime objects of the company, thus many leads may choose to earn money when conflicting with the social welfare. For example, population should be taken into consideration when the leaders of a company decide whether to start projects. But if a project may bring profits to the company, the leader is very possible to start. An obvious example is the Enron Energy Company who chooses to deceive its customers, suppliers, and employees, the leaders of the company forged misleading documents to overstate income by hundreds of thousands of dollars just in order to make short-term economic interests. The bankruptcy of this company informs the executives of companies should not merely focus on some practical interests, regardless the long-term interest of the corporations.
Finally, in the realm of politics, if the political leaders only focus on his own practical interest, the government may be reduced to the machines and the tool of the leaders to serve their own interests. The leader should not only consider whether they are to be reelected or elected, they will overlook their responsibilities of the society. The leader who only cares about his personal business, and then the well-being may be kicked out of his consideration. Without the care about the people, Martin Luther King will not take the public well-being of the African-American into account.
In sum, we should take practical issues into our considerations, but over-emphasizing it may lead us to a wrong direction. |
