PIC: ARGUMENT6 - The following was written as a part of an application for a small business loan by a group of developers in the city of Monroe.

"A jazz music club in Monroe would be a tremendously profitable enterprise. Currently, the nearest jazz club is 65 miles away; thus, our proposed club, the C Note, would have the local market all to itself. Plus, jazz is extremely popular in Monroe: over 100,000 people attended Monroe's jazz festival last summer, several well-known jazz musicians live in Monroe, and the highest-rated radio program in Monroe is 'Jazz Nightly,' which airs every weeknight. Finally, a nationwide study indicates that the typical jazz fan spends close to $1,000 per year on jazz entertainment. It is clear that the C Note cannot help but make money."

The speaker claims that C Note jazz club will make money in Monroe. To support the argument, the arguer provides evidence that there are many jazz fans in the city of Monroe. Moreover, the arguer points out that several well-known jazz musicians live in Monroe and Jazz Nightly is the highest-rated radio program. Clearly, the argument is logically flawed in several critique respects.

First of all, the arguer fails to warrant the assumption that fans would not go to the jazz club because of the distance. The fact that the distance between the jazz club and the city is only 65 miles does not suggest that fans do not attend the jazz club. It is likely that fans are willing to go to there because of the great interests. Or perhaps most fans have their own cars. Unless the arguer has a survey in fans that are not willing to go to the jazz club because of the so far distance, there is no guarantee that fans in Monroe did not attend the club.

Secondly, the arguer fails to substantiate the assumption that jazz is extremely popular in Monroe. Even if over 100,000 people attended Monroe's jazz festival last summer, it does not means that so many people in Monroe would like jazz. It is entirely possible that over 100,000 are almost coming from other cities around Monroe. Besides, even if most of them come from the city of Monroe, there is no guarantee that audiences attending the jazz festival are the jazz fans. Or perhaps they want to attend accidentally in summer. Moreover, it is likely that mild climate and beautiful place are suitable for life so that several well-known jazz musicians lived in Monroe, which had nothing to do with the jazz. Furthermore, the arguer fails to provide any information about other similar programs. It is equally possible that other programs are so tedious and boring so that people might choose the programs 'Jazz Nightly'. Or perhaps people like the jazz program, it does not follow that people are willing to afford the fees of club. In any event, the arguer cannot conclude that the jazz is popular in Monroe.

Finally, the arguer can not provide evidence that the study is suitable to the city of Monroe. In the above study, we know nothing about the city, such as the overall condition of economy, population, and the number typically fans, all of which are ignored in the argument. It is likely that typically fans are a few part of population in Monroe. For example, there are 1000 fans compared with the total population 1million. It is entirely possible that fans in Monroe can not afford to the fees of club or they have money but they are not willing to spend so much money to attend the jazz. Lack such information, the arguer cannot convince me that the jazz club will make money.

To sum up, the argument is not well-reasoned. To justify the argument, the arguer should provide the evidence that fans do not attend because of the far distance and the jazz is popular in Monroe. To better assess the argument, the arguer would need information about the city of Monroe and whether the fans in Monroe are willing to spend $1000 per year on jazz.
