The author makes a threshold claim that tradition and modernization are exclusive and then claims that we could only choose one between them. I strongly disagree with the author for three reasons: (1) Modernization from some points of view is developed upon tradition and therefore, they are indiscerptible; (2) Sometimes, modernization helps tradition to meet the needs of its existence and serve the mankind even better; (3) Whether we shall choose modernization or tradition is determined by the needs of the existence of human.

First of all, Modernization sometimes is developed upon tradition and therefore, they are indiscerptible. The modernizations today would be the traditions tomorrow, and sometimes they serve as a basis of the modernizations tomorrow. This is especially truly when it comes to the fields which develop continuously. For example, the achievement of the modernization today is developed from Aristotle’s critical thinking that theory follows empirical observation. No one could deny how important this point of view is. In the realm of Art, lots of modern architecture today are based on the style of Rococo in the past. This is especially true when it comes to the realm of science, all the modern industry and new realms of science should stem from the classical physics, chemistry and mathematics. We cannot imagine what the world will become if we drop all these traditions, therefore, in this circumstance that one is developed upon another, they should be mutually compatible as they stand.

Secondly, modernization helps tradition in several realms to meet the needs of its existence and serve the mankind even better, and therefore, they are inseperatable. The existence of the old tradition has to accept the challenges from the ages and the modern time, and sometimes modernization could help them to meet these challenges. For example, the leaning tower of Pisa could exist to serve its task of preserve historical values because of the help of modernization of the industry and architecture. The old films could be preserved to educate people for the help of the modernization of the multi-media technology. The modernization of industry has helped the traditional geology to examine Earth thoroughly rather than just reach it from some superficial results. Therefore, from these examples we can see that modernization helped tradition with its developed technology to function even better for the whole mankind.

Finally, Whether we shall choose modernization or tradition is determined by the requirement from the existence of the human. We benefit from both the traditional Chinese medicine and modernized western medicine because they can all meet the existence of the human being. We learn from both traditional books and the information from modernized new technology of multi-media because each could meet the different needs of us. We listen to both traditional classical music and modern pop music because they all serve to help us either enjoy it or get sentiment from it. Therefore, there is no exclusion between them, whether they will be chosen is decided by the fact that if they can meet the need of the existence of human beings. We do not necessarily have to choose one between them.

To sum up, tradition and modernization are inseperatable in the ways that they mutually help each other to develop even better. Moreover, the decision that whether modernization or tradition would be chosen is not an either-or choice, it should be scrutinized by the needs of human existence.
