“It is the artist, not the critic, * who gives society something of lasting value.” *A person evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.
The question of whether the artist or the critics gives society something of lasting value has been debated for quite a long time. In my point of view, while we adore the artists for their great contribution to human society, we should not ignore the importance of the critic who evaluates works of art.
With out denying, artists have made great contribution to the entire human society. They use their genius and talent to create imaginative and fascinating works which free our mind out of the shackle of the earthy and temporal routines. It is hard to imagine what a dull and gloomy world it will be with out the decoration of arts. People need arts to inspire their imagination and creativity; People need arts to form a sense of what is right and what is wrong; People need arts to express their deepest feeling about the great nature and deepest love for their lovers. All the aspects mentioned above constitute the general function of art. Therefore, artists, as the creator of all kinds of arts, plays an very important role in people’s social life and give the society something of the lasting value, like imagination, creativity, sense of right and wrong, and the love and affection to the great nature.
However, some works of art are sometimes too abstruse and obscure; they need critics, someone who evaluate works of art, to discover the underlying value and ingenuity of these works. In this situation, people need such critics who own a high-ranking artistic sensibility to help them understand and appreciate the deeper meaning of works of art. The critics are like the experts who know the particular codes if we liken works of art to great treasure locked in a safe. Meanwhile, the critics are also conducive to the discovering of artists. Although we have to admit some tragedy like Van Gogh, who with unprecedented talent and genius, lived a miserable life without people’s recognition and acknowledgement, in most cases, greatest artists win their deserved fame and reputation through the comment and appraisement of critics. For no everyone maintains an insight of arts like a conaiseur or an aesthete, we need professional critics to make us aware of those artists with marveling talent and techniques but short of public reputation.
Additionally, due to the critics comments, some artists can improve themselves. Everyone is required to keep improving themselves, artist is no exception. The comments of the critics are just a mirror, in which the artists can find out even the tiniest flaw and stains in their works. Many famous directors changed their move style according to the critical comments. In response to criticism of the public, Steven Spielberg achieved his masterpiece Schindler’s list
to show that he is not a director who can only play with advanced movie technologies but the one who is able to make a serious and artistic movie
To sum up, as I have mentioned at the very beginning, we should not ignore the significance of the critics who help discover the artist, modify the artist and provide the artist with their deserved fame and reputation. |
