提纲：
1、如果代价小于收获，那么值得；
2、如果代价大于收获，那么不值；
3、除了考虑代价，还应考虑方法的合法性。

Is any means taken to attain a worthy goal is justifiable? The speaker claims so. I don't completely agree with this view. we should take expense of the means we adopt into consideration, and besides, we should make sure that means we will take is legal.

In the first place, we should take what the means we adopt into will cost into consideration, on the one hand, if we can gain more than or at least the same as our expense at using such means after we reach the aims, then we might take such means to attain our goals. As a case in point, during the first year of the Second World War, army of the Nazi Germany completely beat the British troop coming to reinforce their allies in the west Europe and quickly occupied most countries in the west Europe. As the result, British army had to retreat back to their homeland and England plunged into a dilemma that they should resist Nazi without help of any other country. Although British people were aware of their terrible situation and they knew that it would cost them high price to fight against invaders, they did not give up and stick to protect their homeland by force. Finally they beat the Nazi invaders and broke down the so called myth that Germany was invincible. Even if they paid so high to their resisting, it was worthy to do so, consider if they surrender to Hitler, the result waited them would be much worse, they would surely lost freedom. So if by reaching goals we can gain more than what we lost, then taking such means might be available.

On the other hand, if it turned out to be the case that what we benefit can not compensate for what we spend, then such means is out worthy of consideration. As an illustration, today, our education places so much emphasis on grades that it leads to the case many students work hard the whole day without having enough rest and doing some exercise. As the result, many children today have some physical problems such as short sight. And it is not sensible that pursuing high grades at the expense of one’s health. Through learning should not be ignored, health is much more important for our children, and without good health one can not study well. So if the cost outweighs the benefit, we should better not take such means.

In the second place, besides considering how much we gain and how much we lost, we should make sure that means we will take is legal. If such means disobey the law, then we can not use it to reach our goals, one should look no further than scandals revealed in the area of academic. Today, many scholars deceive people to earn their reputation. They apply patents for so-called invention which might be fruit of other scientists. Stick out a mile, such illegal action will do harm to not only those true inventors but also the whole society. As a conclusion, we should judge whether means we will take is legal before we make a decision to use it.

In sum, before we embark upon pursuing our goals, we should take what the means we taken will cost into consideration, if by reaching goals we can gain more than what we lost, then taking such means might be available, but if not, we should better not take such means. Beside, we also have to make sure that means we will take is legal.
